New to the forum and keen to get involved! I'm picking up our new black lab puppy on Monday, he has a week at home with my Fiance before she goes back to work. I have been given permission to bring him to the office, as long as he behaves himself.

Is there any advice as to how we can learn to settle him? Any advice from people who have brought a pup into their office? Anything that we should particularly focus on next week before he's brought into the office?

    Hi and welcome.

Whilst at your office do you have easy and quick access to an outside area? I'm think that toilet-training is going to be your number one priority (it probably would be anyway but you really don't want to be having dog mess in a work environment).

You might also want to look at whether you have anywhere at the office where you could have a crate to provide a safe area for your pup (and somewhere for him to sleep - pups sleep a lot).

    Welcome to the forum!

My OH has ambitions to take Charlie to the office - with a crate set up, and a park across the road, it'll work fine I think. So long as OH's work mates don't mind Charlie's habit of nicking anything hat isn't nailed down. ;D

But, I don't think it's possible to describe a very young puppy as "well behaved" - unless asleep, they are generally little terrors, into everything (great fun though). Or perhaps you have one of the rare but valuable quiet ones that I've heard about? Otherwise, maybe wait until he is a bit older before giving it a try. After the out every 20-30 minutes toilet training is over, for sure, otherwise you'll barely be at your desk!

How to put this diplomatically ;)
Puppies don't behave themselves unless they're sleeping :)

Welcome to the forum and looking forward to seeing pics of the new arrival next week. As previous posts have said - it's going to be almost impossible! However, if it's possible to have the crate, go outside every 20 minutes, be able to entertain him when he's awake, have eyes in the back of your head, then you'll be fine. They do sleep a lot (between 15-20 hours a day) so if you get all the work done while he's sleeping and take all your breaks when he's not......

If it's possible to manage all that then it's got to be better than leaving him at home.

Hi! Very exciting to be getting your puppy soon :) How nice to work somewhere where a dog is welcome :)

I agree that a crate or puppy pen is the way to go, with frequent trips outside. Accidents may still happen so take towels (cloth and paper) to clean up. Do you have carpet at your workplace?

Hi and welcome :) look forward to seeing your photos :)

I agree with everyone else, it may be a challenge as they do like to chew (cables, wood and anything else they get their hands on!) good luck and let us know how you get on :)

Thanks for your replies...much appreciated. We're both so excited.

We have a large outside area - our office is surrounded by fields and open space so it will be perfect for the regular toilet breaks. I've done a lot of research and have purchased a cage for him to live in when at the office.

Do you think it would be beneficial to advise my colleagues not to give the dog attention when he is in the cage, therefore he learns that when he's in the cage he is there to rest and settle down without disturbing people?

I'm just nervous because my boss has said he's more than happy for the dog to live in the office as long as he doesn't cause a nuisance to other people...so I want to do all I can do avoid him being a nuisance to others.

The people who own the dress shop I go two, have successfully brought up two pups at work. The pups stayed quiet except when hungry. They didn't have two pups at one time I hasten to add!

Your boss sounds lovely! I've no real advice - too much of a newbie - but good luck and please let us know how it goes!

I think that'd be a good approach for when he's in the crate. You could also take a sheet to drape over the crate to help him settle.

I'm sure it will be challenging, but great if you can make it work. I would get an old throw or similar to put over the crate so it is dark and cosy and (hopefully!) sleep-inducing.
Nobody told our Mira she was supposed to sleep lots when she was a pup. In fact she only got the hang of it in the last couple of months (she's 16 months). Enforced sleep in a covered crate was essential for our sanity!

Good luck with it. Look forward to seek puppy pics.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
    Good luck with your plans!
A covered crate is an essential. What about some kongs? Always good for quiet time in crates too.
Do you have Pippa's Happy Puppy Book? Essential reading I would say.
I would agree toileting would be the biggest problem.
    Hope all goes well.
would love to take my dog to work.....maybe in a few years wben she calms down (she is 4 now)

    Hi and welcome here!!

I agree, this is going to be challenging. It's a wonderful thought to do this, but young pups really do need a lot of concentrated time and attention to get into a routine. I would also urge you yo get the book, and to read all the advice on here and the articles on the main site about crate training. Kongs and other toys to keep pup occupied in the crate will be essential.

Not to try to put a damper on this, but have you put any thought into a Plan B, if your boss finds the pup too distracting for you and/or others?

Would love to see pics as well, once pup arrives!

Good luck, keep us posted, we'll give you lots of "virtual" help, anyway! :)
