Hello you lovely people. Many thanks to all who sent their love to Latte, he is now fully recovered from sickness and hypersalivation, with world class care from Priory Vet Hospital in Purewell. I have a question about Ticks and Fleas please. Do you prefer the flea collar or other methods like Frontline, or a home made spray recipe of distilled white vinegar, water, almond oil etc. from a breeder online. Your guidance on this would be most appreciated.

    Thanks, Latte and Ron :-\

If you are not in a tick area, I wouldn't bother. I don't like putting chemicals in my dog's body unless they are absolutely necessary. I have had dogs for over 40 years and only saw one flea and as I worked at a vet, I might have taken it home with me. When we went to Cornwall for a holiday I did buy a 'spot on' the back of the neck medication for ticks, but cannot remember the name now.

Ticks are rife round our way so we use a tick collar as I don't want them in the house with a little one.

I there Ron, I live in an area with a large deer population, and a rise in Lyme disease so far this year.
As my dog doesn't wear a collar in the house, I am not a fan of the tick collars, so use a Spot On preparation, though I am not convinced of its efficacy.
Lochan is giving a trial of a new oral flea and tick product and I for one am eagerly awaiting her feedback. This would help I think if you have dogs that are frequently in and out of water, like mine.
If you don't already have one, get a tick remover (we think the O'Tom Tick Twister is best) and check your dog regularly, especially if you have been in long grass.

We have Lung Worm here so I use Advocate once a month which I think covers that plus most other things except ticks.

I use frontline which I get from vets. Meg doesn't wear collar indoors either. I apply it about every 3 months. Also give her drontal worm tablets, also got from vets.

Penny gets the spot on treatments every 12 weeks, but we alternate between frontline and advocate as I'm not convinced of the efficacy of frontline - I've heard that fleas are becoming 'immune' to it. But frontline does treat ticks too so I will continue to use it for now. Though if I saw Penny had a tick I would just remove it.

    We're overwhelmed in ticks here!

Pulled two off honey dog in as many days.

i use frontline but will remove ticks as soon as i see them with my tick twister. it's a fab little thing and has got every tick out alive.

i pulled one out of honey's face tonight that was tiny but even so the tick thing got it all out.

we had fleas on them this time last year so keep the frontline up to date. interesting what you're saying about them getting immune Penny+me i did wonder as they seemed to be alive and kicking and their frontline was up to date. it could have been that they'd not been on them long enough to die. i re-dosed them and all was well.

Yeah it was just something I heard from one of the vets I used to work with. I mentioned how my parents cat always had fleas even with keeping her frontline up to date and she said to try something else as some of the fleas were developing a resistance to it, so I gave her something else (advantage I think but can't remember) and sure enough it worked! A know a couple of people who had the same issue.
