Hey everyone! Ice searched the forum and their seems to have been a few posts for toys for our dogs. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for me? Dexter turns one on 3rd June and being my substitute child, my plan is to spoil him rotten (even though that's every day!). So I was looking at getting a few new toys for him. We've got a few from the Kong range (wobbla,tennis balls, classic). The Wubba didn't last a few days. He's got a nylabone but isn't very interested in it and an antler. In all honesty, I miss him having a teddy. He's gone through about 3 Invincibles snakes and numerous other 'tuff' soft toys. Has anyone got any ideas for me? Something that might last a few weeks. Done some research but I'm fed up of buying toys that are graded near the top of the toughness scale only for Fang (sorry, Dexter) to prove it wrong Thanks ;D
Re: Dog Toys Hi, I have had the same problem over the last month or two. The only thing Harley hasn't destroyed within minutes is a medium rope ball by Ruff and Tuff, costs £3 at Pets at Home. Not much else, apart from tennis balls lasts here :
Re: Dog Toys Megs used to like frisbees when she was young. They're not very strong though. Did last a while. We used to get those nylon bones cos they're supposed to be virtually indestructible. That was until meg got hold of them. Like Naya said the rope balls are good. They used to last meg ages and they'd get so rotten and horrible we'd throw it out and get her a new one.
Re: Dog Toys Charlie used to have piles of toys, and was rather "over toyed" ;D ;D ;D he still does, but doesn't have free access to them. Now he is older, I get a toy out when I'm going to interact with him - so it's a toy to find, fetch, tug, or carry etc. I just don't give him soft toys to chew and play with on his own. Firstly because he just destroys them, and I can invent better things for him to rip up from the recycling tub, but mainly because it removes the value of the toy (at least for my boy) as a rewarding interaction - he gets familiar and bored with them. Our best tuggy toy is a green frog from plush puppies, and also large rope bone. Carry toys is a large red lobster, and an alien sea creature, plus a football on a rope. Find it is a mongoose with ropes on the end from kong Fetch is anything whatsoever
Re: Dog Toys I don't normally buy soft toys for my dogs but a while ago bought Rachael two toys from the 'unstuffed range'. The skunk which is black and white, and the racoon, which is brown. I bought them for her because she loves to just carry stuff around constantly, and still, at 2, had not grown out of picking up anything we leave lying around. I thought she was over the chewing stage, and that it might take her mind off my tea towels and our shoes. Because they have no stuffing, if the dog does nibble a corner, it isn't encouraged to continue by having the fun of pulling the innards out. She wasn't interested in the racoon but loved the skunk, carried it everywhere for about three weeks, then suddenly destroyed it. We are not sure what Skunkie did to upset her but now she has fallen in love with the raccoon. He has a kind of worried look on his face, and we all wonder when 'his turn' will be, but she hasn't harmed him so far I probably wouldn't buy these toys again, because I only found out after she had played with them for a while, that they have a squeak. However, Rachael doesn't chew on her Racoon (yet), so we only get to hear the squeak when one of us steps on the toy by mistake.
Re: Dog Toys Thanks everyone ;D I last toy I bought Dexter was this green ball with what looks like a big marble in the middle that rattles. Now, he either enjoys it or is hell bent on destroying it because of the noise. But so far, so good. I did ask at Pets at Home had many been returned and they said one and it was broken by a, you guessed it, labrador! The staff member did say last year they had a tuff toy in, was a bit pricey but they flew out as people swore by them. Unfortunately she didn't know the name but I'm watching out for them. I think like Harley it will just be tennis balls for now. Although Dexter has been chewing a bit today so need to watch the furniture.

No one else on the house understood why I was so proud of this ;D ;D ;D It's lasted well, although I did find a dismembered leg in Merla's bed this morning . I love those soft ducks, but I think they also have squeaks. I'm seriously thinking of getting one and performing my own squeakectomy before I give it to the dog....does that make me weird?? The other good buy in the soft toy department was a soft 'crinkly' snake from P@H, which doesn't really have anything to chew off, crinkles satisfyingly and gets carried around proudly quite often.
Re: Dog Toys I think a trip to Pets at Home is on the cards for me...I'm not complaining! : I took Dexter the other month and we were down the aisle where the dog chews are. I think he knew that if he licked them, I'd have to buy them. He's not soft ;-)
Re: Dog Toys I really hate that every soft toy destined for dogs has a squeaker in it! We bought Penny this 'indestructible' lizard thing from pets at home and actually it's been really good. All she's done is pluck the little felt triangles off his back. The rest of him is in one peice. But he has a squeaker. It's not so bad as she generally just likes to hold the soft toys and carry them round. I guess I'm lucky in that she doesn't tend to destroy toys, I bought a children's soft toy dog when we got her, for her to snuggle up to at night (it was bigger than she was) and it is still by far her favourite toy. She carries him round by the ear.

[/quote] You are in the company of several UK labrador owners that are linked into the Obster Australian Lambie Network (OALN) via camels that have had squeakectomies. No, you not weird. 8)
Re: Dog Toys We love squeaky dog toys here, Orange Snake is still Charlie's absolute favourite and still in one piece ;D We say NO to squeakectomies, I'm going to start a petition ;D ;D x
Re: Dog Toys I am not buying furry toys or toys that squeak. But I look for toys that are blue because that's the colour that dogs see, and I think yellow. Apparently, green and red are just seen as grey! So a red ball on green grass would be harder to spot. ???
Re: Dog Toys Slightly off topic but like many I used to think this dogs effectively only saw in black and white. Turns out the physiology behind this theory wasn't accurate. Re: Dog Toys Ooh, fabulous link, thanks Gordon! Colour perception is fascinating- this article does a really good job of describing it. I have 2 'easy to see' dummies in dark blue and fluorescent yellow, and two 'use your nose' dummies in dull orange and green, which fits in well with the colour profile they describe, and they do indeed seem to work that way.
Re: Dog Toys I was wondering, with this science in mind, why so many Kong toys are red. I ordered a safestix on line and couldn't choose the colour and got green. I really wanted blue for the above reasons. Also, the Kong ball - the heavy solid one - is red.
