A bit of advice please folks. Albert had been regularly wormed by the breeder, and then again by me at 9 weeks ( because he passed a worm.) I gave him Drontal from Vet and he was "out of sorts" for 24 hours. I wormed him again at 11 weeks, with Drontal and again not himself.

So I have wormed him again today, (he's 17 weeks) this time I tried Panacur granules as I've been told they are more gentle. But he is definitely not himself again today. Now am I right in thinking I have to give him another 2 doses, one tomorrow and one on Monday? I am really reluctant to do this to him for another 2 days if he's feeling under the weather.

So my question is will the One dose suffice till next time (as it does for adult dogs) or should I give him the other two. No sign of any worms by the way.

Do I continue to worm him monthly till 6 months or is it 12 months?

Thank you lovely people for any help. You always give sound advice.

Sorry Jan, I don't know but I will be watching to see what people say. I have phoned my vet before, out of hours, for free advice. Or how about calling the breeder?

Hi, Murphy is 20 weeks. I wormed him this week, and the vet said he'll need wormed again at 6 months, 9 months and 12 months.

We did panacur granules first time and yes it's for 3 days. Did Drontal this month with no problems. My awesome vets advises monthly till 6 months then same as an adult. so every 3 months afterwards :

You could try Milbemax next time, which is just one dose. :)

Thought I would mention - I had used Drontal XL previously but hadn't ordered a new lot so bought Bob Martin worming powder stuff from somewhere (might actually have been the supermarket).
Lilly refused to eat her dinner with it on. Unheard off.
I guess other folk must use if fine, but it wasn't for us, back to the Drontal.

As far as I'm aware Panacur only works if you give all three doses. What do you mean by 'out of sorts', what symptoms is he displaying?

I also use Milbemax (for the dogs!) and they never have any side effects, but I only worm once a year.

Charlie's records show that he was wormed:

With 3 doses of panacur when he was 4 weeks old
Again when he was 6 weeks old, and 8 weeks old

My vet then wormed him again at 10 weeks with panacur, then drontal at 14 weeks, and 18 weeks.

After that, he moved on to monthly advocate and 6 monthly tape worm treatments.

He has never had any side effects. I'd be tempted to give your vet a call and ask what is best to do.

I should add I was talking about adult dogs and not worming schedule for a puppy. Was just saying Milbemax seems to have less side affects to my dogs than other wormers.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

What I mean by out of sorts is, he won't sleep, whines in the crate, not as playful, seems thoroughly fed up. This has only lasted 24 hours each time. The breeder gave Milbemax but as he passed a long tape worm at 9 weeks I was concerned that it wasn't working for him. I always gave my previous dog Drontal with no problems, but I've read somewhere they've changed the formula and it is upsetting some dogs now.

I've given another Panacur dose today and will do it again tomorrow, and think I'll just give the Drontal in future as he will only be upset for one day and he might get used to it as he gets older.

Three of my dogs are ok with Drontal but it has quite an adverse effect on Alice. She was sick and out of sorts on Drontal when she was a pup so I have been using Milbemax for her for the last seven years, which is fine. :)

Just out of interest, what's the forums concensus on advocate? Jasper had it applied and it did bring away some worms (hed been successfully treated with panacur less than a week before too)

He was sick a couple of days after the advocate but it was applied with his first jab so I don't know which if either made him ill. It seems an ideal medication in theory as it seems to cover every parasite going, so I think I'll try it again and hope he's ok with it unless otherwise advised ???

I use advocate. I have heard of dogs having a reaction to it, so grilled my vet and was convinced this is unlikely. You do have to watch swimming, as it's toxic to water life.

    It doesn't cover tapeworms.

I don't think that I'd necessarily think a dog being sick 2 days after a treatment was due to the treatment, could have been completely unrelated.

I'm not sure that the effectiveness of the product can be measured from whether you see worms in poo though.

    Thanks Julie
I think I've some research to do before deciding on his ongoing flea / worm treatment. The vet didn't go into length about the advocate so a lesson learned for me to ask more questions in future.

I was just surprised that after the panacur was visibly effective, just a few days later the advocate brought away more (quite large too). I guess it just shows that the panacur hadn't worked properly at all.

Just a couple of quick questions. .
Do you use another regular treatment for the tapeworm?
Is the water toxicity temporary after application or ongoing?
