I've read so many reports that we are over vaccinating our dogs and just wondering what others think about this subject. Many vets say that after the initial puppy jabs, they don't need repeating for 3 years, with the exception of Leptospirosis and Kennel cough. In fact many of the drug manufacturers recommend every 3 years.

So are vets routinely vaccinating our pets as a money making exercise? I'm not sure what I'm going to do with Albert. I'm leaning to every other year at the moment, but the jury is still out. We are all terrified our dogs will catch something fatal, but we only vaccinate our kids initially and not every year!

    Your thoughts...

Hi Jan , yes the puppy vacs are vital , I also have the juvenille booster at roughly 12 months of age and then every three years . The one I do repeat annually is the Lepto one as both of my dogs swim in rivers and pools and I believe that the Lepto vaccination only lasts for one year .
Its personal choice really , and I wouldnt try to impose my views or try to sway , my own Vet says every three years, so thats good enough for me :)

I'm with you I think Kate. I'm really concerned about overdosing my dog with vaccine. I will do the juvenile booster at 12 months and also the Lepto as Albert already has a liking for water (he's only 17 weeks) but as you say, it is a personal choice. I vaccinated my other lab every year and thought no more about it. But we are a bit more informed now, especially with the internet freely available.

    Thanks for your input.

You should find that your vet will do the booster vaccinations three yearly, except for the Leptospirosis which needs to be done yearly.

We've just been called in for the leptospirosis vaccination only. Going on Monday. Meg doesn't go near water (she's a wuss) :) but will get it done anyway.

Update on leptospirosis vaccination. Took Meg yesterday and our vet explained that it's been discovered that there is more than one strain of lepto. Apparently, there are 4 different strains. This was discovered when blood was taken from dogs that had lepto. Because of this meg had her vaccination yesterday but has to go back in 4 weeks for a booster. Thought I would let you all know.
