Hello again everyone. Several weeks ago I posted my puppy was not giving me signals about going to the bathroom outside. She is now 14 weeks old and still does not give any sign. She holds all night from about 11PM until 6AM. She can do this. She also, most times, holds from about 10:30AM until about 4PM when she is alone due to work/jobs. Rarely is there an accident on the floor when I return from work at 4. She CAN hold and as soon as I get in the door, I let her out without hesitation. She does her business and I praise her. But she does go on the floor sometimes. For example, last night I was relaxing with her next to me watching TV. She was playing with a hoof we bought her and she was playing roughly with it. Next thing I know I look and she is squatting down peeing on the floor. She was just out about an hour before. Its not a question of holding and losing control. I do not know what to do. When I saw her last night I told her no outside, fairly calmly. Then I picked her up and carried her outside, telling her in a calm low voice bad dog. I set her down told her go potty and again said calmly bad dog. She finished outside at least. Should she be "getting it" at this age now? Anything else I can do? One other thing I thought about was to crate her when I leave for work. I hate that idea and think its very cruel and dont even know if it would be possible or helpful. Ideas?? Thanks.
Re: Still not getting it - urinating on the floor Hi there, your puppy is still a baby and it is completely normal for a 14 week pup to pee indoors if she is distracted. She is probably asleep for much of this time. Learning bladder control is not just about physical bladder capacity and control (though this is relevant) it is about wanting to use an outdoor toilet, which is a learned habit, and about not wanting to wee indoors in her 'den' which is instinctive, and remembering to go outside when she is distracted. The problem is, young puppies don't recognise the whole house as their den to begin with. And they are easily distracted. Playing is a prime time to accidents. I think you should not crate your puppy whilst you are at work as the hours are too long. But because you cannot crate her, house training may take a little longer. Hang on in there, keep praising the successes, take her out very frequently, and be patient. You'll get there.
Re: Still not getting it - urinating on the floor This is not meant to be rude or offensive. Are you sure you are clearing up previous accidents properly. It looks clean, and to us it smells clean but to a pup the feint whiff of a previous wee can be an invitation to do it again. There are special enzyme cleaners that help to eradicate the smell. The one I used in the UK was called Simple Soloution. It was very effective, I didn't even finish the first bottle before it became redundant. Hope that helps.
Re: Still not getting it - urinating on the floor Yes, I think the trick is to think of her as a baby. Human babies have accidents right up to school age. I know your pup isn't a child but she is like a very young child. Best of luck to you and your lovely little puppy!
Re: Still not getting it - urinating on the floor Ahh, she is so young yet. Give her time. She sounds like she is doing super well in the day, the rest will follow just give her some time. It also takes some of them months to let you know they want to go out, so just keep taking her out super often and ignore the mistakes!!
Re: Still not getting it - urinating on the floor I don't think an accident at 4 months, during playtime, is so unusual. Wouldn't have been for us, anyway. She sounds like she is doing really very well for Such a baby pup still. How is everything else going? Getting used to being a puppy dad?
Re: Still not getting it - urinating on the floor OK Ill keep patient. Long as I know she is normal and I need to not try anything new, I will keep down the path I am going. The area she peed on last night was an area she had not peed before so I am certain its not a smell thing. She is a great dog other than this and the nipping, which I hope goes away as well. Training her and she is doing great. Tonight first formal training class. Thanks.
