Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Sounds like a mostly good holiday Lauren! I was in hoots about her escape from her crate! ;D We seem to get reasonable air circulation with our back windows down a few inches, but I guess if we are going anywhere, chances are its not going to be motorway. Haven't really though of that - OH hates open window noise :
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! If she sits in the back seat won't you have the boot free for your luggage? Obi is very impressed that Penny got to travel on a steam train!!
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! The great thing about being a bit behind on the forum posts is that when I'm reading the first post in a thread and it's particularly worrying like Penny being so violently sick....I can skip through to the end and read that she was ok in the end and that you all had a lovely holiday x Lauren as you know we face extreme heat here .....to be honest Dexter isn't in the car a lot,if he is it's a short 15 minute journey ,very early in the morning.....but there's a few things I do that you might be able to use to adapt for next time. http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=6081.msg79241#msg79241 There's a couple of things I've bought for him here..... He didn't like the blanket at first .....I had to c&t him to lie on it and not chew/dig it!we use it if we are out in the garden ( only at cooler times,it's too hot even for us for most of the day) it buys him a little bit longer though with us.it could be used in a crate or the boot of a car though. I haven't tried the jacket yet.....to be honest it is just tooooo hot for any of us,we don't really want to be outside so it's irrelevant to put Dexter in it for just short amount of time.it will be something to use around September time. Less expensive and possibly more appropriate for warm UK days are collars that are made out of the same materials...my parents have used them for their setters when they were touring with their caravan, you soak them in cold water, you can put them in the fridge as well and then pop them on the dog when you set off,Mum used to have a water spray that she would use to,wet the collar again when they had a pit stop on the journey. My friend has about a 20 -30 minute journey to drive to meet me on one of our walks .......she actually puts the hose over her dog and let's him have a shake before he gets into the ac'd car ( we all switch our cars on 10 mins before the dogs get in,she hasn't got a vents in the boot) we do our walk and if it ends at my house, she puts the hose over him again before she drives home so he's always travelling damp.....but don't forget we are dealing with 40+ degrees that might not be appropriate or healthy for a dog in the UK. Also, you have to not mind your car taking on the pungent smell of damp dog ;D Glad Penny was ok and you all had a lovely break x
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Thanks everyone. Lots of interesting ideas to look into. I like the idea of the cooling mat or coat, probably the most practical for us I think... I'm also going to invest in some sun shades for the boot window. I know they won't really lower the temp but should at least help stop the sun pouring in. I've realised it may be partly to do with the design of the car - if you've seen a ford focus you'll know what I mean when I say the boot window is at almost a 45degree angle rather than the vertical angle you would get in an estate car. Essentially it's like a glass roof something I didn't really think about when we got the car. I just looked at floor space and the focus has pretty much the same amount of that as my mums land rover, just without the height.
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! I was just looking for cooling collars as I'd not heard of them and think they'd be a good idea. Are the ones your mum and dad use koolcollars Angela that you fill with ice ? Found them on fillmewithice.com
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Jen ,the ones Mum used are something like the ones on this site ,it was a gel that was inside them not actual ice http://www.northcoastpets.com/cooling_products.htm Don't quote me but I'm sure they were Rogz collars?ill check when I speak to them later ....I would also say that Mum's go to place is PAH ( she doesn't do the internet :) so there's a good chance they came from there ! I've just looked down the site, they do some pretty smart cooling boots too!might be a sign that Dex really should have a set! ;D
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Thanks angela. I'd found that website obviously didn't look properly. :. My mum doesn't do the Internet either except to cheat at crosswords shopping on the Internet is not to be trusted.
