Don't worry, Teena Ann, we are used to talking about poo here, and putting up a picture is extremely helpful!

In my experience poos do occasionally have a covering of mucous like that, and usually everything is fine the next day. I can't explain why it happens but I have certainly seen it a few times in my own dogs and it was never associated with any detectable illness.

How does Cooper seem - is he alert and normal in his behaviour, and still interested in eating and drinking?

If he otherwise seems normal then I really would not worry :)

Hi teena, I'm sorry I typed a great big reply but I have a poor internet connection where I am and it didn't post :(

If you are worried at all it's always best to phone your vet for advice.

I would be surprised if anyone was thinking parvo though as I'm pretty sure that isn't mucousy... Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I can't look at the pic as it won't load for me I'm afraid.

Teena Ann, just thinking here.. Has he eaten anything he shouldn't in the last day or so? And when was the last time you wormed him? :)

    Hi Teena Ann

I can only go on my experience. Has he been again since? If yes was that the same, normal or looser.

Any three could be the answer as they've all happened with my dogs. ::)

In my experience mucous like that is usually colitis. Something has irritated the bowel and caused the feaces to pass through too quick. It could be a bug or something he has eaten. He may just go straight back to normal or he could get diarrhea possibly even with blood. If that happens you should see your vet, I would.

If he shows any other signs that something is wrong, lack loss of appetite, lethargic etc than again I'd see the vet.

Hopefully next time he poops it will be normal. :)

I have had two dogs who had parvo :( it causes diarrhea, not mucous, so I would doubt this is parvo. And the overall state of the dog is important, both of mine were obviously sick, listless and not eating, etc.

Ohhh.. My dog has that too sometimes. Seems to be after she's eaten something with quite high bone content. (She's fed raw) Having read this I then read the parasite/worm info on here and now think I haven't been giving the right anti worm stuff. I only use Advocate but having looked it up it only does heartworm I think. Should I be using Drontal plus or similar and if I feed raw should I use it every month? I notice on the main article about this Pippa suggests 'every three months or more often if fed raw'.Hmm. How have I managed to be so stupid as to have not noticed this oversight before?? Glad I saw this thread.

Advocate does pretty much all worms, apart from tapeworm.

Oh ok..hmm. Do I not have to use a separate worm treatment then or should I use one for tape worm and hook worm? Sorry-feel I'm being a bit dense! I looked on a raw feeding forum elsewhere and it was suggested that this kind of poo could be linked to the amount of bone in the food. Is that right, does anyone know? Thanks! ;D

It's best to talk to your vet about a worming regime that's appropriate for your area as different worm types are prevalent in different places (for example, we have to worm for heartworm in Australia but you might not need to). Occasionally you should probably use a wormer that covers tapeworm :) A wormer like Milbemax covers everything except heartworm.

I think that any dog should be wormed regularly with a broad spectrum wormer, regardless of its diet. All dogs have contact with other dogs and eat grass and other animal poo where worm eggs will be found.
