I was trimming my old boy's nails last night and noticed he has a nail that is cracked right up the middle. I'm not sure it was bothering him since he hadnt been limping or anything like that. Should I be doing anything for this nail? It was not bloody or anything like that.

    Thanks!

Hi, personally I would put a call into the vets as I wouldn't have a clue ::)
Hopefully someone else on here might be able to offer you some advice ;)

I'd trim it a bit so it doesn't catch on things but otherwise I'd leave it. It will heal up (or, grow out normally I mean). :)

If he's catching it in things and making it worse try taping a sock around his foot, with some masking tape or similar around the sock but above the foot or heel (depending on which leg!) to keep it on.

I brought him to the vet since he had an appointment anyways for his rabies shot. I pointed out the nail and she looked at it and said to just keep clipping his nails as usual and let it grow out. So hopefully it will continue to be fine until then!

This happens to Penny's occasionally, like our own nails split or flake sometimes. It never seems to bother her so I just wait until it flakes off on its own, or grows out. If it bothered her or was bleeding etc I would take her to the vet but something like that usually you can just monitor and see how it goes.
