I know a season lasts 21-28 days approx, but how long do they bleed for and how do you know when they are 'safe'? Harley started bleeding a week ago and I just wanted to check what I should be expecting etc :
Re: Another season question! Hi Ternaya , often, after the first couple of weeks, the bleeding goes a watery colour, this is danger time as many owners think that their bitches are finished, they arent This short period is when the bitch will stand for a dog , the way to test her willingness to mate is to lightly touch her on her back, near to the tail and if she swings her tail to the side ( called flagging ) she is very much available This is often followed by another bleeding period until after a few days , the whole season is finished and done . I think its timely to remember that during the fertile period , bitches are just as eager to mate as dogs, so take care , good luck
Re: Another season question! Thanks for asking Jacqui We are managing pretty well......better than I thought we are on day 8 and in all honestly Harley has been brilliant. Only a bit of mess, but she's really good at keeping herself clean except at night and when she first wakes up (lots of sheets over the furniture and bed) My daughter is doing 2 short lead walks a day and I'm doing the later evening walk. Her lead walking has improved at least 75%. I am glad my daughter is home as Harley is clingy, wanting lots of cuddles and subdued most of the time I'm working 8am-6pm most days this week as I'm interviewing 40 candidates for 18 job vacancies I have for the summer!!
Re: Another season question! Hang in there Ternaya, it doesn't last for long. Another couple of weeks and it'll soon be over. Just continue to be watchful, and as Kate says, beware if she seems to stop bleeding - this is often the most dangerous time. Harley will soon be back to her normal cheery self.
Re: Another season question! Just the thread i need ternaya Puzzle is due any time soon it is just a waiting game. Her first season lasted less that 2 weeks and she came in very early (well thats what everyone we spoke to said). Sounds like you are harley are coping very well
Re: Another season question! Looking forward to another walk ahem when the coast is clear! Sounds like you are coping very well Benson took off like a rocket after a bitch today, luckily i wad still attached..but i do worry about indadvertedly causing a problem.
Re: Another season question! Next doors dog has been barking a lot tonight and I have heard several dogs in the neighbourhood whom I've never heard before (usually very quiet here), think it might be because they are starting to get interested and can smell her : we are being very vigilant.......6foot fences and gate, very secure back garden, we are putting her collar and lead on before answering the front door just incase I do miss our walks though :'( we usually go out for 1-1.5 hours a day and it is our time and really helps take my mind off things......instead I'm coming home and doing some more work as Harley is sleeping a lot atm Glad you still had him attached Kate definitely up for a walk when Harley is able too definitely don't want any pups!!!
Re: Another season question! Think I spoke to soon.........Harley was really restless last night my hubby woke her up at 7.15am as normal for breakfast and a wee and play. He brought her back upstairs to me at 7.45am saying she hadn't eaten any of her breakfast and just kept lying down I got up at 8.30am with her, not interested in playing.....still not eaten her food and generally seems out of sorts
