Just a quick question for all you lovely forum people....

Pongo is now six months old and for the last six weeks or so has had really weepy eyes. Sometimes just tears, sometimes a pale yellow sleepy discharge. It doesn't seem to be causing him any distress at all (he is not pawing at his eyes or anything)... just blinking a little. It just makes him look sad with tears in his eyes and stained fur beneath them!

Vet said it might be hay fever (we live absolutely SURROUNDED by oilseed rape), or possibly bacterial conjunctivis. She gave him a five day course of antibiotic eyedrops in case it was conjunctivitis, and it sort of clear up (not completely). That was a fortnight ago, but now it's back again. It is worse during the day - seems to be clear when he wakes up each morning.

I'm inclined to think it is just an allergy / hay fever thing, and ignore it. I certainly don't want to be giving him eye-drops or antibiotics all the time unless they are really going to be doing some good. I'm planning to just wait and see if it clears up after summer when pollen count is down.

Any views? Does this seem reasonable?

    Rosie

Bathing his eyes with saline (1 teaspoon salt to 1 cup water) may help a bit. You could also talk to your vet about the value of antihistamines in case they might help. Young dogs do seem to be a bit prone to messy eyes. In my experience (only two dogs) they do tend to grow out of being so susceptible. But I don't think I'd ignore it even so :)

When we lived in France, one of our fields was planted with oilseed rape , one of my dogs had a similar reaction , sneezing a lot too . In her case, Piriton helped a lot but yes , ask your Vet if you`re at all worried x
