Hi, I had to leave Maisie today for 2 hours today, I've done this before, probably once or twice a week, and there has been no problem. Today, when I returned home she was making low, grunting noises, rushed out of her crate, ears back. She didn't greet me like she would normally do. She then just sat in the kitchen and whined, ears still back. It was near her dinner time so I thought she would settle after eating something, but she didn't. She's wondered around for an hour, ears back, whining and making funny little groany/grunting noise. She kept throwing herself on the floor as if to sleep, but not settling. Do you think this sound like separation anxiety or perhaps something has upset her? Very strange as she is usually so happy and relaxed.
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? She doesn't sound well. Could she have swallowed something? How old is she, I forget? I would be taking her to the vet I think.
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? I agree , any behaviour that is so out of character could have a hidden meaning, hope she is ok . Just a thought but has it been thundering where you are ?
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? She sounds unwell to me Debs, I too would be talking to the vet. Hope she is ok.
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Hi Debs, I agree with the others, a visit to vet. Hope she's ok, little love. Keep us updated.
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Thanks for all your comments. She seems to have perked up a bit, still making squeeky noises and ears back. Just taken her for a little walk by the house which she seemed to enjoy, but she's was very quiet. Now chasing her Kong wobbler round the garden!! I'll see how she is in the next hour or so (the vets are open til 7pm and have 24 hour cover). I feel like I did when I had my first baby!!!
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Oh Debs I hope Maisie is feeling better soon, they are such a worry aren't they! I am worried Nellie is sleeping too much even the kids shouting and running past her doesn't seem to rouse her!! It's worse then having kids!!! When I read about Maisie's reactions it reminded me of a time my last lab got stung by a bee in the house and acted really strange and scared for the evening, it could be something like this maybe??
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Thanks Nicola. Miss Nellie, is just saving all her strength and in a couple of days time when you have got used to her quietly sleeping she will be revved up and ready to "rock and roll". Maisie was very sleepy for the first few days and then got right into her stride!!!! 8) Maisie has just settled to sleep for the first time this afternoon, so hoping she's going to be feeling better after a nap. I did give her a worming tablet this morning, but I wouldn't have thought that that would cause this odd behaviour, could it?
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? I agree with Nicola, Debs, although I don't have a dog, so I can't talk really - my first thought was a little insect bite. Oh dear what have I signed up for (only kidding!). Nicola, I did smile when you said you were worried about Nellie sleeping too much but I guess in your position soon I might be just the same : Have a good night you two. Or should I say four?
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Sorry Karen and Katie, completely missed your posts : Maisie is 14 weeks now. I don't think she could have swallowed anything that she shouldn't have. She's still very quiet, but engaging in a bit of play, but if I ignore her she just sits and whines at me. All very odd!
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Hope she is Ok Debs?? Albert is definitely out of sorts with worming tablets but not displaying the same behaviours as Maisie though. Jan
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Hi everyone, Maisie is back to her usual self this morning! She is also teething like mad and has a couple of big teeth pushing through. I wonder if her teeth were causing her pain, coupled with the fact that I left her, that caused all the symptoms she was displaying yesterday?
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Ah good news! Poor thing, can you rub human teething gel on puppies' gums? Just occurred to me and I bet the answer is no. Would she like some ice do you think? I'm glad she is her normal self, must be a relief Debs.
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Hi Debs, found this yesterday when I was searching for better toothpaste for megs, she's got tartar on one of her eye teeth. It might help Maisie. http://www.muddypaws.co.uk/puppy-store/health-hygiene/puppy-teething-gel
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? You know what, maybe the worming tablet made her feel uncomfortable. It often does seem to result in runny poos for a couple of days, and can make some dogs feel decidedly under the weather. That would be my bet.
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? Yes Jane, good to see her looking perky again....currently barking at a frozen rice bone! I've given her ice cubes as well, seems to help and is very funny watching her chase them along the floor! ;D I feel like I am on a major learning curve, with serious new mum syndrome!! How many days left Jane, you must be on count down!!! Karen, I hadn't realised that worming could make them feel "off" as well! She didn't respond well to the advocate either (I think).
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? .. especially not if you gave the worming pill and the advocate at the same time. I think it's best to leave several days between the two. Glad to hear she's feeling better today!
Re: Separation anxiety or frightened? I'm going to get some of that teething gel! Thanks Lablover Debs, I have just emailed the breeder to make arrangements, I am not sure if she's 8 weeks on Saturday (next week) or the Sunday. Will hopefully be booking the room in the pub later today. The ramp for the back door is made, crate is up, vet bed all over the place. My new ceramic water bowl came today too - very exciting! ;D
