Thanks Lochan, our vet doesn't recommend Frontline any more as it's so ineffective and a waste of money and I haven't tried any of the others. I am going to ask about Bravecto as have run out of Frontline now.

I don't cover for winter either Jac, doesn't seem much point, I'm bad too ;)

I am still messing about with the right set of treatment for Charlie! I absolutely need tick protection - the advice to not bother and remove ticks I find was rubbish!

I'll ask the Cornish vet tomorrow...

I think everyone needs tick protection for their dogs as they can be very harmful, we definitely do being rural with lots of Deer  I wouldn't want to not bother and just depend on removing them especially with Hattie's coat I would never locate all of them.

It will be interesting to see what the Cornish vet recommends. :) x

I have just looked online and I have seen it for as little as £18 per tablet for a 20 - 40kg dog, you do need a presciption. It also says it kills most ticks, what does that mean, how many kinds of ticks are there? :( x

Bravecto kills all our British ticks and lasts 3 months. Only 2 months for Rhipicephalus sanguineus which is a warm climate kennel tick.

It'll be Bravecto for us next year as this year Riley's tick collar, while very effective, seems to have rubbed his fur on the underneath of his neck. Where he has a whorl in his ruff he has a little bald bit :(

We're due a vet visit anyway so will get the bald spot checked out but I can't see any other reason for it.....

Just wanted to add, Pops had a tick attached to her at the weekend, first one for months, so we gave her the other half of her Bravecto tablet. That'll be it for the winter I hope, and next March I'll definitely be using it again. It has been so much less bother than applying the tick repellent!

Went to the vet for Riley's regular vaccinations. Asked about Bravecto for next year and it seems they've had several dogs on it this year and seen good results. Only disappointment is we'll still need advocate spot on.

I asked my vet and he hadn't heard of it. :( Plus, he said that advantix was about the only thing that worked. I pushed a little bit, but got no-where and he was adamant that advocate (lung worm and ear mite risks) was necessary for Charlie (the concern is doubling up of advocate and advantix).

So, I had given Charlie one dose of advantix back in June, and haven't given another. The vet said "well, how long has it lasted?". I said "it says on the packet 4 weeks"...he said "let me know when Charlie gets another tick". Charlie hasn't had another tick, all summer....

    :-\

    Still confused then.

I have used the Bravecto tablets for all four of mine. They have now been about three months completely tick free, and Exmoor is prime tick country! The only drawback is the cost, for four tablets I paid close to £100. Otherwise they have been perfect.
