My pup won't have had inoculations at 8 weeks, when I pick her up. My breeder recommends waiting until 10 weeks for the first jabs. Any comments?

Not sure Jane, Hattie had her first jab before we got her at 13 weeks, I thought most breeders do the first one before the pup leaves to go to it's new home, maybe it varies breeder to breeder :-\ x

Jane, Maisie had her 1st jab the day she was 8 weeks old at my vets and then at 10 weeks. Perhaps check with the vets you are going to use?

I don't think it is usual for the breeder to do the first shot if puppies leave at 8 weeks. It's best to take your puppy to the vet right away for shots, a check up, and worming programme. Your vet will advise the right timing.

There are some really helpful comments on this thread here, about vets needing to redo shots if they are given too early:

Thanks everyone, I will see the vet within 2 days of getting her home so I will do as advised; probably required by the pet insurance anyway (actually, I am sure I read that in the fine print). Interesting that the breeder recommends waiting until 10 weeks for the first one.

Your vet will most likely start the vaccinations when you see them just after picking her up. My vet wanted to wait a week as we got Penny at 7 1/2 weeks old and he thought she was a bit young.

I think the worry is that the earlier you do it the more chance there is of them being less effective because the maternal antibodies are still in the system up to a certain age. However you don't want to leave it too late as you'll be waiting weeks longer to finally be able to take them on proper walks etc. it's about finding the balance I suppose.

    Morning Jane,
Our breeder did not vaccinate Nellie as she was obviously not 8 weeks but she does not always vaccinate her pups anyway because different vets use different makes of vaccinations so she said she would rather wait until the new owners can get the jabs done so not to run the risk of over vaccinating if their vets want to use another course of the vaccinations (this did happen to my sisters dog but she was fine).

My vets like to vaccinate at 8 and 12 weeks because of the maternal antibodies that are still present in the pup. They have only recently changed to this from 8 & 10 weeks and will still do this if required but advise against it.

    Thanks everyone.
Another interesting thing is I was advised that the first and second jabs should come from the same batch, so when she has her first injection the vet should get a second one and write your name on it for when you come back.

This is what happened to us.
We didn't pick Lilly up until after our holiday, so the breeded kept ahold of her for 2 and a half weeks, so she was around 11 weeks when we got her home.
He had organised the first puppy vac, but our local vet used a different brand, so we had to start from scratch.
It meant that everything we did with Lilly was late.
With the info from here, and hindsight, we see that this is where a lot of her "issues" have stemmed. Not that she is awful or anything :D
