Re: Albert's first swims (video) Looks like he's having lots of fun! Well done on getting it uploaded
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Jane he's doing great, thanks for persevering ( and the help of the forum IT angel Rachael ) I can't believe he kept swimming for his stick...I'm sure my Dexter would have been after the ducks !
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Hey Jan, Glad you managed to work the video! How amazing, he is very brave! Ozzie is still scared of the bath, can't wait to take him to the lake not far from us when all his pesky jabs have been done!

Re: Albert's first swims (video) His coat is amazingly soft after swimming in the lake. I live in the mountains of Snowdonia so the water is very clean and also quite soft. Feels so different to when he goes in the sea. Albert doesn't know how lucky he is to live in such a beautiful place, with lakes and the sea on his door step! Jan
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Just seen the video - he's having a good time isn't he. My dog splashes in until she can't stand up, but then won't go any further. I need to get her to watch Albert's demonstration!
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Lovely to see him swimming. That water looks OK but beware in some water there are hidden branches or other things and the harness could get caught. I always take my dog's collar off in water. Sorry to be Job's Comforter, but a friend's dog nearly drowned because of a collar caught up, some brave man jumped in and saved her.

We do take the harness off now as I thought it would give him more freedom of movement but not the collar. Never thought of hidden branches so thanks for that. Jan
Re: Albert's first swims (video)
Just seen the video - he's having a good time isn't he. My dog splashes in until she can't stand up, but then won't go any further. I need to get her to watch Albert's demonstration!
Hi Joy. His very first swim was in the sea, with my OH. We then took him to a lake, and my OH got in again, and we tempted Albert in with a frisbee and sardines!.. He was nervous at first and was splashing about, but the sardines on a floating frisbee were too hard to resist and he did it! He had another 3 or 4 goes with 'dad' still in the water and the last of the sardines, then went in for the frisbee all my himself. The next day we took him again and I recorded it, this was done over 3 days. He's been swimming by himself for 4 days now and really loves it! I think having someone in the water with him really helped his confidence. My previous lab didn't swim until he was about 3 years old, and that was only after we had a day trip to the sea, ( we didn't live close to it then) and everyone was in the water, so he followed. I remembered that, so this time around I started Albert very early. He is 20 weeks and has been going in the water since 13 weeks but only paddling. Good luck Jan
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Just caught up with this - fab video! My eyes were drawn to the ducks in the background too - they looked like they wanted to join in the fun, if they were just a teensy tiny bit braver at any rate, I am impressed he was ignoring them in favour of his stick!
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Good video's and keen retrievers. Please do not throw sticks to retrieve, have seen some nasty accidents with the dog running into something and pushing down its throat. Would not have liked to pay the vets bill Get a dummy they are not that expensive and it would save a trip to vets, and no collars or harness when swimming.
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Thanks for advice Indy. We don't use sticks any more. We have a Kong air fetch stick, a dummy retrieve and a floating Kong on a rope. ;D
Re: Albert's first swims (video) Albert is a very keen retriever. Right from 9 weeks I would roll a ball in the garden and command "fetch" and he would love it! We progressed from there once out and about. My previous lab Harry would run for a ball, dummy etc only once or twice, never bring it back, and generally couldn't be bothered! He didn't swim either until he was around 3 years old! But this time around there are no young children distracting Albert and me, so am able to focus more on the puppy. Harry was a great dog though, and we had him for 15 years! ;D Jan
