    Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if we are overreacting but Ozzie (11 weeks old) has had a weeping eye for a couple of days which we were keeping an eye on it, but today it has been a lot more often that we have needed to wiped it, and sometimes its white, other times its a yellow colour, but we think the colour change is it if we don't wipe it straight away, should we be worried and calling the vet, or should we just see how it goes?

I obviously have tried to google this (big mistake as it just full of scary diseases - :( )

    Any help would be appreciated?

Hi , Sam used to get weepy eyes when he was a puppy , I used to bathe them with a cold used teabag, it is very soothing . If the discharge looks yellowy green then this might be an infection so if it persists, I would pop Ozzie to the Vets, he may need some antibiotic eye drops . Of course, it could just be irritation due to the current high pollen levels , so yes, bathe them and keep an eye on them, pardon the pun :)

Pongo (6 months now) has had weepy eyes for a while - clear, white or pale yellow, just as you describe. I worried for a bit then took him to the vet - she said it might be an infection, but more likely was allergy (we are surrounded by oilseed rape and lots of pollen). We put him on a week-long course of antibiotics just in case it was an infection - it cleared a little, but came back again immediately.

In the last couple of weeks as the pollen season has begun to pass, his eyes have started to clear up a lot, although they are still rather red. It doesn't seem to be causing him any distress (he is not pawing at his face, for example), so on the whole I'm deciding it is no more than hay fever and - as long as it is not upsetting him - I can let it pass. I don't really want to get into Piriton or similar antihistamines unless he really needs it.

If it is still a problem when the pollen season is really over, or if he starts showing any signs of distress, I'll take him back to the vet.

I don't know if I'm doing the right thing, but thought I could at least share with you what I'm doing!

Let us know how Ozzie gets on!

I've never counted or done any analysis, but it seems to me that lots of owners of young labradors report this. And more often than not, it's a slightly droopy lower eyelid that exposes a bit of sensitive inner eye prone to irritation. And it also seems, more often than not, that they grow out of it.

Since this happened to Charlie, of course this might be terrible conformation bias and I notice those posts that are most similar to my own experience. ::) In which case, you might ignore me!

Anyway, a trip to your vet might at least point you in the right direction of nothing/something to worry about.

If the discharge is yellow/green, the eye looks bloodshot or squinty or he seems to be rubbing it then a call to the vet is definitely in order.

Other than that I would keep bathing it at least twice a day and if it doesn't clear up in another couple of days then I would think about the phoning the vet.

Also have a think about if you've introduced anything new into the air, for example new air fresheners or scented candles, new spray cleaners, anything aerosol like as these could all be potential irritants.

Sounds like the prefect excuse for a cup of tea to me :)

Thanks everyone, we will try the teabags for rest of today and tomorrow and then give the vet a call if its still going on, fingers crossed teabags work :)

We had exactly the same problem with Benson and it started at around 11 weeks, infuriating actually as we were in between insurance companies and this means that Benson now has a "pre-existing condition". The vet reassured us and said actually with stocky, show bench labs they need to grow into their large heads, so can suffer from baggy eyes due to excess skin, which exposed the delicate eye tissue to possible problems. A few months down the line he did grow out it, and he does have a large head! ;D What we used to do was simply wipe his eyes in the morning. I know there are drops available but we didn't use them.

Yep definitely very infuriating as we are in the same situation, we had our 4 weeks free cover from our breeder and have taken out our own to start now, so we currently have two but we didn't tell our new one about any pre existing conditions as there weren't any! but we can't claim for any illness stuff until 11th July, which seems ages away, but we are still covered with our 4 weeks free so if there is anything I'm hoping I can claim that and it not affect our new policy, which I know is probably wishful thinking, but no harm in it :) haha!

What we did was change to Petplan the policy which offers lifetime cover. We were transparent about the eye problem, and they said that as long as it did not reoccur within a 12 month period, then they would remove this as a pre-existing condition. I bet there are a lot of lab owners with the same pre-existing condition though, as this tends to crop up about the same time the free 6 weeks insurance ends...
