Hi, I have a 6 month old black lab who is currently going though testing for CNM, I will to shocked if the results come back negative. I think I have read every article on the condition but what I really would love is to speak to someone who has or had a CNM affected puppy. At the moment Jakes future isn't looking great, he is really struggling mobility wise. Leigh.
Re: CNM Oh no !!!! Poor Jake and you too !!! I don't know much at all about the condition ..looking it up now but it sounds terrible if his mobility is restricted. Perhaps someone else might like to enlighten me on this one...I'm so very sorry for you !
Re: CNM Yeh it is a pretty horrific genetic condition that affects mobility and the oesophages. Jake is mainly mobility at the moment but has had funny turns if lies a funny way, rolls on back etc. The condition affects ability due to muscle fibers not forming. So jake falls, trips or slides, a lot, struggles with stairs, can no longer walk him as makes him worse so he gets to spend a lot of time out in our garden, which is thankfully large. Our vet is doing DNA testing which takes 3-4 weeks for results and we have sent off swabs to France to have tested as well, these should be back next week. Leigh
Re: CNM How difficult this must be I haven't got any knowledge of this problem but I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry you and your pup have to experience this. It sounds like you are doing a brilliant job of caring for Jake.
Re: CNM Hi there, and welcome to the forum I am so very sorry to hear that your dog might have CNM, you are obviously aware of how serious the disease is. I did a bit of research into CNM a couple of years ago. I was hoping to write an article on the progress with testing in the UK and looking at people's experiences with the disease. I discovered that it is quite difficult to get people to talk about this illness, but I did make a couple of contacts in the States who were living with CNM dogs. I will try and find them for you. Have you talked to your breeder about being put in touch with the other puppy owners? Because symptoms appear quite early on in life, the chances are that neither of your puppy's parents are affected. Therefore both must at least be carriers in order for your puppy to be affected. (if one parent was clear, none of the puppies would be affected even if the other parent was sick) So, if both are carriers, statistically, at least 25% of the litter will be affected. In the unlikely event that the mother or father was affected and not showing symptoms yet, it could be more. I appreciate it is not as helpful as talking to someone that has had more extensive experience of the disease, but it sometimes helps to talk to others in the same boat. I do hope your puppy's test results come back negative. Let us know how you get on. Wishing you lots of luck Pippa
Re: CNM Really am very sorry to hear that Jake may be affected , you have obviously read lots about the disease which is good , hoping like crazy that he hasnt got it , please let us know .
Re: CNM Hi pippa, yes Unfortunatly well aware how serious this condition is jake just seems to be getting worse and worse. I think I already know what the outcome is going to have to be but really don't want to think about it!! Why were people reluctant to speak about it?? Can't believe there so little info on it when it such a serious condition. I have spoken to our breeder, she knows 6 out of the 8 people who took pups, one being a good friend of mine, and been no problems with any other pups. She will contact the other 2 if we get positive results. Leigh
Re: CNM My contacts are mainly breeders, and I guess breeders don't want to talk about it because it is such a potential disaster for them, and for their reputation.
Re: CNM Thanks Lois. Hopefully not long till get the results and then we will take it from there. Will keep you all posted x
