    Hello

Very rude that I posted on Labrador training before introducing myself here first.

My name is Sarah and I have a yellow Labrador called HD, or more formally, Honey Dog. One day I'm going to name my pets myself rather than letting the children do it!

I'm really enjoying training her and understanding what motivates her. I didn't realise just how much I'd love her or the amount she would change my life. But I would be surprised if I live without a dog again.

Lovely to meet everyone and see so many people in the same situation as me.

Hi too from me. I have two young uns, one is the current Scamp of the pack (black lad Brodick, thirteen months, he's a lanky gorgeous mushy soft sack with a good sense of fun, a passion for rolling in anything that smells foul, and a very strong hunt drive, in fact I almost think I have a spaniel sometimes. he would love beating... and red fox girl Cuillin, nineteen months, current Angel of the pack, sensitive, a tad on the highly strung side, but also with a good sense of fun and gorgeous and fiercely loyal. have my hands full but they are great...

    hi

    thanks to all for replying.

reading it back it was a fairly shoddy intro! HD is 8 months (just), yellow and is fiarly placid. she's quite calm and loves her food. she has an adoration of other dogs and i struggle to keep her focus around them. actually i don't struggle, i can't.

she managed it around a gundog trainer's very calm dog but only with fairly forceful persuasion. i was told that this was better than it could be at her age.

my children adore her and thankfully her temperament round them has been so good. she's never so much as complained at them.

we've had problems with the children following the "don'ts" in Pippa's Gundog puppy book especially the chasing her (which she eggs them on to do) and the not taking things out of her mouth. Oh and tug of war. :-[

she was an extremely easy small puppy, never mouthed us and did very little jumping up. she's not chewed furniture or dog beds etc. Her major crime though was stealing children's soft toys and dancing round the house with them. this seems to have calmed down and the children have got more patient with her but lead to a large number of arguments!

Hello, I have Amy a yellow 10 week old and two boys, 4 and 7. Amy is lovely but she has her moments. She listens more to my 7 year old than me sometimes!

    Hi Sarah and HD,

You have described my dog - also just about 8 months but a black boy, also named by my children, they chose Digby and he is our first dog.
Loves any other dog but even more so people - LOTS for us to work on. His is wonderful though and amazing with my 3 boys who are all under 10.

Despite their best efforts my boys do tend to give him commands I'd rather they didn't, and then repeat them again and again...arrghhh, and chase him, and play tug, and pretty much all the things we shouldn't be doing. He's a fantastic dog though and I'm sure he'll get there despite us. :)
