Hi there, our lovely Meg is just 5 months. She is good as gold and no bother. We are planning to spay her after her first season. We knew this would present some challenges as we also have an intact male! She is fine with no symptoms but 2 days ago my male has gone "crazy" !! Mounting her and he wont leave her alone. He has a wild look and wont settle. Poor thing he is shattered. I am guessing this means she is coming into season? she seems a little young but I guess not too unusual. Do you think its her season or something else ? Thanks
Re: First season ? She does seem young but the hormones can start surging a couple of months before the actual season so maybe it's that. However I wouldn't expect your male to go crazy over her just yet. Perhaps there's a bitch in season nearby and he's taking his frustrations out on her?

Re: First season ? Yes I did wonder that ! We live on a moor top with wind and no trees. Smells I think travel easily. I wonder if it another lady causing his frustration. I guess time will tell. Poor lad though will chat to vet if things don't settle soon.
Re: First season ? Its generally a mad house Dexter, 5 year old twins 2 cats and 2 dogs !! Oh and the Tour De France on our doorstep this weekend ! All good fun !
Re: First season ? Oh we've just been watching the organising on Sky News.....it all looks lovely and the sun was shining,lovely part of the world,my Hubby is from there and we were wishing we were back for a visit seeing all the festivities!will you go out and watch them go past?x
Re: First season ? Oh yes. We are in the middle of it so it goes by us twice. Just taking Meg (and boys as school closed) down to Grassington to check out the chaos ! Good socialisation for her ! The whole Dales has gone mad though...yellow fever. Quite exciting

Re: First season ? We thought Harley was coming into season at 5.5 months as her behaviour changed quite a bit and male dogs started showing an interest. She came into season at 10 months old. Good luck on your trip to the Dales
Re: First season ? I just remembered something I read when researching seasons... Apparently it's not unusual for a bitch to have a 'silent heat' if it's their first season, where you don't notice hardly any symptoms. I suppose the only thing that would give it away would be a male dogs behaviour.

Re: First season ? I read this with great interest since my 14 week old female is still a ways away from her first season - I hope! My 3.5 yr old male Golden mix tried to mount her already, but I think that's dominance play, not serious intent ;D. My plan is to get as close to her first season as I can, then spay her. I used to work for a vet who specialized in reproductive care, and she said the best way to tell when to spay (if you want to skip the first season) is to watch the angle of the vulva. As the bitch gets more mature, the hormones cause it to become more vertical. A spay too early will result in a more horizontal vulva which can lead to UTIs, as it's easier for fecal contamination to occur. (I hope I'm remembering this correctly!) Anyone else know anything about this?

I'm not so sure about this - Penny had something called an inverted vulva when she was younger, which means it was slightly tucked up and because of the skin folds around it meant that she would constantly get urine infections. The only cure for this was for her to have a season in which the normal swelling pops everything back into its rightful place - sure enough no more UTI's since her first season. Perhaps this is what your vet meant? If you pup has an inverted vulva you should wait for one season otherwise they will have continuous UTI's throughout their adult life.
Re: First season ? Hi, just to update. My male was demented for 10 days. Meg never showed a sign of anything. We had to separate them which was horrible for both of them. It was a rough time as the old boy just could not settle. Then suddenly back to normal. So I don't know if was another bitch in the locality and he was taking out his frustrations on her, or if Meg was doing something hormonally ?? I am going to chat to my vet because when she really does come into season we all can't live like that. I am not sure what the answer is but I suspect my old boy may need a little op before her
