Hi all Haven't been on in ages. Izzy is now 4.5 months and doing great. Only thing is when she is off lead she keeps eating poo. Last night on our walk she even ate cow poo. Which left her sick today. Is there anything I can do to stop her doing this. ? Thanks.
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? Is she eating other animal poo only, not dog poo? I'm afraid that it is totally normal....and, yes, quite disgusting. I turn a blind eye to it... That doesn't mean you need to let her do it though. You could teach her a 'leave it' cue. Practise at home and start with boring things like a raw potato or whatever she doesn't really like - walk her past it at a distance and as you pass it say 'leave it' then mark and reward (have someone stationed by the potato ready to grab it if she goes to get it, then next time make the distance greater). Gradually decrease the distance till she can walk past without showing interest. Then make the object something more interesting and repeat, starting with a greater distance again and gradually reducing. Work up to something she really likes to eat. Until you successfully teach a 'leave it' cue you'll need to physically prevent her from eating stuff, by keeping her on lead or avoiding cow poo etc. That might not actually be possible, for perfectly good reasons. In that case you might need to live with a bit of poo eating....
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? Tatze adored cow and horse poo - she used to drink sloppy cow pats - ew! I made sure I had super tasty treats to lure her away, now she looks to me when she sees cow and horse poo. (Shes 15 months old) It took a long time but she's 99% cured. She is still a bit partial to sloppy sheep poo 'tho! Keep their wormers up to date and no harm whatever will ensue

[/quote] You wonder how we can love them so much sometimes don't you! Cat poo was a bit of a delicacy with us we are almost cured ??? our Leave It at 22 months is pretty good ,Rachael's advice is spot on....but with cat poo I still have to intercept before he gets to it....if I see the signs we move on,if I'm not concentrating he'll pounce and try his luck...all is lost then :-[
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the American indian word for dog, when translated literally, means 'eater of horse poo'! Harvey is quite discerning on our walks - only sheep poo will do :
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? Poppy used to eat dog poo when she was a puppy - especially her own We moved her on to a raw diet, and eating of dog poo stopped immediately. I do think though that lots of dogs just grow out of it. In the mean time, in addition to the good suggestions already made, if you can encourage retrieving games, that may help keep her mind off eating disgusting things. Also - keep up with her worming regime, in case she picks anything nasty up. Good luck!
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? Thank you for all your replies ! I am going to try leave it and see if you can do that. Yep she will eat dog cat cow poo. But thankfully not her own ! She makes me laugh cause when we are out and I am picking up her poo she won't come next or near it and is look at me to say really are you lifting that ewwww!!! Is it normal that it will leave her sick? Yep we are all up to date with wormer and fleas might just say it to the vet and make sure she is fully covered. Good to know she will grow out of it. D
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? Rabbit droppings are caviar to Pongo. Quite impossible to prevent it, so I'm living with it.... at least it's dry. :
Re: Eating poo !!!! Help. What can I do ? Sheep and rabbit poo for Albert! Hard to avoid as I live in North Wales. But I am teaching the "leave" command although with not much success at the moment. I keep him on the lead whenever I spot any sheep poo, but the rabbit droppings are everywhere so can do now't about it! :'( Jan
