My female Yellow Lab, Molly, will have dizzy spells when she's been running too hard in the heat. The first time it happened, I was way out in the fields (we live on a farm), so we just rested in the grass for a while and then slowly walked home. Since she quickly and fully recovered with rest, the vet said it was likely EIC and to avoid strenuous exercise when it's hot and/or humid. Since then, I've been much more aware of that aspect and Molly has not had another episode. I hope Ruby's issue is as simple! Good luck!

    Hi All!

Well after a long 4 weeks the test results have come back negative for EIC. Unfortunately the Vet I saw is currently on holiday so cannot speak to her to see what the next steps might be. It's been suggested it may be epilpesey but I am very dubious on this one!

Recently though as the wet weather has swept in, Ruby has been running with no side affects. I think it may just be to avoid exercise in heat.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. We might not get a definative result but certainly know what to avoid.

    x

I'm glad it is negative for EIC. Sounds very much like my spaniel's 'condition' . I have learnt to spot the very first telltale signs and I can manage it very well. :)

Glad to hear it's not the EIC, and I'm sure you'll be very aware of any of her symptoms if they reappear. But hopefully they won't!

    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and was hoping you could give me some advice on a problem my Lab has.

I have a 1 year old Labrador called Ruby, shes very small only about 20 kg.

When we go out for walks she doesn't suffer with these dizzy spells, only when we play ball. When we finish playing, she will start to walk home and begin to sway (almost likes shes drunk) and her back legs start to go to jelly. She normally ends up sitting down and slightly disorientated. After about 30 seconds shes fine and jumps back up again rearing to go. This has happened approximately 4 times in the last three weeks. On one of the occasions she was really disorientated and we ended up going to get the car. The only thing human I could relate it to is when we feel faint I guess.

I don't want people to think I am a careless owner by asking on here and not taking her to the vets. Its been warm in the UK recently (not that I've walked her in the heat because that would be irresponsible) and she has not showed any other signs or symptoms outside of these 30 second patches. She's eating as a Labrador normally does (like a horse), toileting and sleeping fine. Shes got nice pink gums and a cold wet nose.

It's very strange. I'm just wondering if she could be getting dehydrated or maybe something more sinister? I've got another three year old Labrador and shes not showing any signs of a problem.

Any suggestions would be very helpful indeed.
[/quote]hi I have Lola 3 next month. She has had 3 episodes of what we believe is paroxysmal Diskinesia, we thought we were going to be ok as she had first one in January, second end of feb then sadly a third one yesterday. She loses the ability to use her legs and is completely out of it, it is not epilepsy as we have had a dog with this sadly. This last one lasted nearly 5 minutes once over she gets up as if nothing has happened other than panting. We are actually away on holiday at the moment so I will get her referred by our vet for a scan which we declined after the second one to see if her raw diet would benefit her. Believe me I have tried everything. She's a very fit athletic dog and these episodes do not follow strenuous exercise. The episodes your dog has May or may not be the same I wonder what your vet will suggest. Regardless I wish you luck and hope she is well.
