Poppy and me are off to our second attempt at Puppy classes as she is a rescue pup we have to do these special classes the first attempt was really not for us they were held in a small village hall with about 15 pups there it was utter chaos and Poppy being a large pup just wanted to chase all the little fluffy dogs it was held in the evening after we had a long day at work ( Poppy comes with me to work everyday ) so it is with trepidation that we approach tomorrows morning class Poppy is even bigger now....i just hope there arn't to many little fluffies there, wish me luck!!!
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Good luck! I hope it's a really nice class with a friendly, helpful instructor And with lots of Labradors.
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Aww...good luck for you and Poppy - hope it goes well - do let us know jacqui
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Good luck to you both. We start another training class this week and Digby is 7 months. THe puppy class I took him to was also not for us (similar too many puppies / general chaos ). Its really hard to find a good one, lets hope you've found one. How old is Poppy?
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Good luck for tomorrow Lois I didnt take Sam to any puppy classes , hangs head in shame : The ones around here seem to be big groups which I didnt like the idea of so just took him around lots of other dogs on walks instead but if you find a good smaller group , then good for you
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Well we've done it...I think it will be much better more trainers, less dogs and its outside, Poppy being 6months was one of the biggest and strongest dogs there but not so many little fluffies, just have to put in the practice now ready for next week, Poppy is now sleeping excitement obviously too much for her!!
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow We always seem to get in trouble with Cockapoos for some reason. Mine tries to play but they seem to like to roll on their backs a lot and then their owners make accusational comments about dogs that are too big and scary for their little poppets. I've seen them roll at the sight of her so I can hardly chastise mine for it. I am very careful around them now but thankfully by avoiding towns w,e tend to avoid most little furries. She met two 12 week old labradoodles today and she appears to be perfectly capable of being nice to tinies but I felt rather hounded out of one class due to this so I definitely share your worries.
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow before anyone thinks i'm horrid to cockapoos, i'm not honestly. i'm sure they're lovely. just the ones we've met seem quite submissive in play and HD looks like a massive, over boisterous dog in comparison.
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Poppy just gets very excited with other dogs..whatever they are but especially fluffy ones but im hoping puppy classes will help with that fingers crossed..to be fair i need training as much as she does!!!! or maybe more than PopsShe is my first puppy and at 52 love her to bits already, just want her to be able to meet other dogs and not try and eat them whatever her size!!
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow Second puppy class today....started off mad to be expected with eight various sized puppies..Unfortunateley Poppy is the largest and although the others get just as excited and jumpy because most are tiny it does'nt have the impact that Poppy does..she did do a few good things so was pleased with her and there are about 4 trainers so we do get help...but still unsure and wonder whether she would be better on a one to one basis, she was quite naughty attacking the lead which i thought we had beaten, the trainer squirted the lead with bitter apple stuff which worked for a few minutes and then i think she quite liked the taste!!!! Perserverence i guess this puppy lark is hard work...but love her to bits
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow I'd persevere with the class for a while. Puppy classes are full of excitement and chaos initially but as everyone's ability to work with their dog improves it all becomes calmer (usually). It's a good opportunity to work on getting and holding your dog's attention with distractions, at the very least! It's great that you have four trainers to help you. Looking forward to updates
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow We still, at nearly 3, go to "puppy class" - well....obedience! It is for us a social activity as well as a place to practice doing things right : with lots of doggy distractions. Our mix of dogs is always changing and we are always looking to learn from others (and maybe others mistakes) Personally I am happy to hear any tips you might come across Lois! Hope you and Poppy enjoy your classes too. jac & lilly
Re: Off to Puppy Classes Tomorrow If i do get any tips will def pass them on...at the moment its just trying to concentrate on what we are being told with a very excited large puppy on the end of the lead...i am hoping as the weeks go on Poppy will get more used to the other dogs and will become calmer fingers crossed!!!
