my 3month old has an over-bite and his lower canines have come in , inside his upper canines.
One of the teeth is contacting the upper palete.
The vet recommends pulling the lower canines asap.

Anyone else have experience with this ?

i dont like the idea of him being under anethestic at 3mo.s
i'm wondering what might his adult teeth grow to..

Sorry to hear of your problem with your pup.
I doubt very much there are many on here with any relevant experience or qualifications to answer your question.
The only thing I can suggest is if your not happy about your vets diagnosis and treatment you could get a second opinion from another vet.
I do wish you and your pup the best.

I would get the opinion of a veterinary dentist. Do some searching online for a qualified vet dentist in your area and ask your vet for a referral.

Something will have to be done about it as it's not ok for teeth to be pushing into the soft parts of the mouth. But it is possible that there are alternatives to extraction that will allow him to keep the teeth, like a root canal, filing the tip off the impacting tooth, and refilling the tooth. A normal vet will not be able to do this as it requires specialist skill and equipment, but it'd be all in a day's work for a vet dentist. It is worth at least finding out if there are other options like this. Sometimes pulling out teeth is necessary but I would be trying to preserve as much as possible if I were you.

Whereabouts do you live, if you don't mind me asking? :)

I have a appt setup with a vet dentist now. i'm hoping to avoid extraction but i'll see what they say & go from there.

this site is very helpful for tips and training. !

Terrific - let us know how you go :)

In my earlier post I had overlooked the fact that he only has his baby teeth right now, so pulling teeth is not the issue it would be with adult teeth. But the consultation with the vet dentist is still the way to go and you will be able to ask about the implications for his adult teeth and what the options might be if the problem recurs :)

Hi there and a warm welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your boy, I hope the vet dentist can give you some good advice. It's a good idea to go to a specialist, as Rachael suggests, for something like this.

Do let us know how you get on.

    [tt][/tt]hi there,

I have just been told the same thing from our vet also. except he would like to wait until our lab is fully grown if possible. (only 4 months) we have another appointment next week to see one of the other vets in the practise so they can discus.

I would be interested in how you get on.

ok, i had a vet dentist look and he advised that the lower canines And the small front teeth between them should go.
he said that leaving it would cause the jaw to grow abnormally. so i am going ahead with it.

i still have reservations about this but i guess i have to take the experts opinion as i want the best for him.

i often wonder if they play on owners emotions for things like this.

also he is getting fixed at the same time. poor guy wont know witch end hurts more !

I don't think vets play on owners' emotions, though I guess one or two might as we are all human :-[ Slightly concerned that you are having your puppy neutered so early. Here in UK we usually leave it until they are a year old for males and some even don't neuter at all if there are no problems.

ya ,i've seen that 5months is common here. However the SPCA will nueter at 3months for puppies being adoped.
The vet mentioned a 5% chance his growth could be slightly affected.
He's not a show dog so that part didnt really concern me.

It is unusual to castrate a dog so early here, but there are loads of cultural factors at play....

I also don't think vets mislead deliberately - or you'd have to be very unfortunate to come across one that did. I do think though that some give out the line adopted by the relevant professional body - which may be influenced by many things - rather than do their own research. I am not being disrespectful to vets in saying this, we probably expect the average vet to be an expert in everything, which is unrealistic.

But do have a look at this study which Pippa posted earlier in the week:
