I dont tend to post about the gundog type training I do with Sam, mainly because technically , it isnt great ;) I wont ever use Sam for working, but he does adore training, retrieiving is his all consuming passion in life, he lights up in seconds when he sees the dummy . Because he wont ever be worked as such , I dont worry too much about the finer points , so the purists would no doubt find me and the big lad lacking in finesse, but we do have a great time , him using his brains and me helping him , whilst Millie messes around with her tennis ball , pretending to do what Sam does :)
This morning , I kept Sam close whilst flinging the dummy high into a very rough area, he didnt know where it had landed, but once released, he followed verbal and signed instructions to the letter , emerging with the dummy and I swear a look of pure elation on his face . Must try and work out how to use the video function on my phone , I`m proud of Sam , he is a different dog when " working " to the soft family pet he becomes once home :)

I loved reading this Kate as it just goes to show you can have a pet and do a little amateur gundog training too, best of both worlds :). Good on you Sam and to you Kate for knowing and providing what your dogs need. xxx :)

I should have said, on my camera , I dont have a mobile phone, no point when we dont have a signal most of the time ;)
I do believe that a dual purpose dog is lovely , Sam is bone idle at home, unless my grandchildren are visiting and then he becomes the life and soul of the party , but once out, he seems to go through metamorphis ( sp ?) and turns into a driven and passionate retriever, which is quite lovely . I know I`m only scratching the surface, playing at it really but as long as we both enjoy it, thats fine :)

I'm sure Sam and my old Murphy must be related in some way. The more I read about Sam the more he reminds me of Murphy. He was just the same. You have a wonderful dog Kate. ;D

    Excellent stuff Kate.

And, at the end of the day, if you have this ...

Loved reading that, Kate. Smashing. I'm with you on the training game. I apply the "That's near enough technique". ;D

Sam sounds like an ideal pet dog - fun on walks and laid-back at home.
