Nelson is my 1 year old lab, this isn’t a new problem but I do wonder if it is something I should be more worried about. So his poos will be normal/firm in the morning and evening. But at lunch time, it will start with a firm poo but then he will go on to do 2-4 small runny poos. I understand that this can be due to over feeding. But my predicament with this, is that he is fairly slim, so I’m reluctant to to reduce his feeds. His is on dry kibble 3 times a day. Would the answer be to feed him smaller amounts more frequently??
Hi @Skye It may be the case that the kibble you are feeding him has a lot of filler in it. Has he been regularly wormed?
Thank you for your reply We did lots of research and were careful to choose a high quality kibble, that is also grain free and no filler. I’m from the uk so not sure you would have heard of it, it’s called Pooch and Mutt. Yes all up to date with his worming.
Hi, @Skye if your dog is at his ideal weight, and slim is good! Also, you have kept up to date on worming etc.. I would take another look at his diet. Specifically the main protein in the kibble. Just because a kibble is grain free, this doesn't necessarily mean it's better. A lot of dogs are intolerant to common proteins found in kibble, meaning the gut doesn't absorb as well. Common proteins that cause this are chicken and beef. By switching to a novel, single quality sourced protein, in this instance, lamb or fish, you can identify which protein in causing the problem. Personally, I would go for a fish recipe, low in carbs with good amounts of fat and see how you go.
Hi, @Beanwood thank you for your reply! Yes he is all up to date with his worming. I hadn’t thought about the protein not agreeing with him, that’s really helpful so thank you. The protein in his current feed is turkey. I have looked though what other proteins this company do, and they have a salmon one which is specifically for healthy digestion. So I will give that a go! When we adopted our lab we had a significant period of runny poops. I knew the royal canin he had been on wasn’t good (having two cats I’d done all the pet food research) so I was determined to switch. I tried Akela, good ratings on all about dogs website and good ingredients, what I didn’t take into account was it’s chicken based and I now now my boy can’t tolerate chicken. We have used the pooch and mutt salmon which is fine but he is even better on barking heads or James wellbeloved lamb kibble. They are all mid range foods but they work for him, he keeps an ideal weight at 30kg and generally no runny poop. I am also aware that the time he eats also affects the quality of his poop so he’s always fed after exercise (not straight after) and not before as this really makes a difference too.
