Hello! I am a proud owner of a beautiful baby boy - yellow lab! My wife and I had a wonderful yellow, "Barkley" that we got together before we were married. He has been gone for three years now. When we got him it was just my wife and I and our first child was born when he was around 7 years old. He was awesome with our girls as he would let them pretty much do anything. If it became too much he would simply move away from them. When Barkley passed, my wife was pregnant with our 4 th daughter. We decided to wait until the littlest was around 3 before we would bring in another dog. My girls are now 10, 7, 5, and 3. Enter "Frisbee"! He will be ten weeks old tomorrow and he's doing great! Sleeping in his crate quietly every night, playing nicely with me and my wife, taking to a leash well...but he is biting my girls like crazy! I know he's playing but it hurts them and I don't have experience raising a dog with kids! I work from home so I will have the most time to train him, but I don't really know what to do to help him learn not to bite. I'm looking for specific tactics that I can use to help teach both the kids and the dog how to interact. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters My puppy stopped biting my boys (4 and 7) before she stopped biting us. I think its about training the kids as well as the puppy. If she bit them she was taken away from them. I would only let them see her if she was "in a nice mood" ie, sleepy. I spent most off the first months stood in the kitchen with the puppy. Now its the other way round and I have to tell them to leave her alone. (7 months now). That's what worked for us but with 4 kiddies I would have no idea!!!!!
Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters the only experience i have is with my puppy jasper who is now 8 month,.....i have no small children living at home, just my son who is 23,the biting was horrendous , i trained him not to bite me by constantly telling him no no no , turning my back, it was continuous,......it took longer for him to stop biting my son as he saw him as a play thing......my 6 year old grandson visits often, it was the same with him , he used to yelp when he bite, turned is back saying no.......them little needles hurt like mad,........its all normal, its just a constant, NO NO NO,.......good luck and welcome to the forum
Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters Hiya Frisbee Nice to have you and your dad on the forum. Pippa has some info about biting on the main website. You should be able to search for it. Can't myself from my phone just kow but someone else may help out. You will need to post up a picture of yourself for us to ooh and ah over Jac!
Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters Hi Frisbee and your Dad,Ive got an 11 month old yellow boy called Dexter. Dex was 5 months when he came to us and was a good way along with his adult teeth, there was a bit of painful mouthing when he was playing with us and got a bit excited,Chris got it full pelt more than me.we just stopped play with a really loud ouch and moved away from him, when he calmed down we would go back to him again......it's wasn't nice so I feel for you with the children. My niece and nephew are 3 and 4 and he sees them most days.he didnt do it very much to them at 5 months.....it tended to be when they where running he would chase them and give a little 'nip' .We tried to teach them and then get them to remember not to run.....tricky with kids I know....but if they did and he tried it on,standstill, fold your arms and turn your back on him and say NO!it worked most times.....if it didn't ,he went behind the gate of his area for time out .

Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters So a week has passed and he's still just as active with the nipping at the legs, feet, hands, w/e of my 4 daughters. I know that Frisbee is not being aggressive or hurting them intentionally but they aren't having any fun with him right now. I have told them many times not to move quickly, not to wake him, not to pet his face, pet in one direction on his back from front to back, etc. I tell them to be a tree and turn around and ignore him but he keeps biting on their legs when they do that. He's only 11 weeks so I know he's very young and will grow out of it but I want my kids to bond with him and right now my wife and I are the only ones who are bonding - and he's wonderful. He is pretty much housebroken and he does very well on his retractable leash. He plays nicely with me - he does mouth our arms a bit - but its light. I spoke to my breeder who is also a trainer and she recommended that I put him into his little pen - not his crate, it's like a plastic baby play pen- while the girls are being so active. I want the kennel to only be associated with sleeping at night and when we go away. She asked me to have them lie down next to the pen and feed him treats through the slats in it all the while praising him softly. Obviously, she doesn't think this is a permanent fix but it keeps the biting opportunities to a minimum - as well as the shreiking, screaming, crying, jumping up on the couches, etc. Also, the feeding the treats will help him associate the girls more as caretakers and not playmates/puppies. I'm at home alone during the day with him - I work out of my home office - so he's not tempted to bite anyone during the day. He's very mild mannered and downright sleepy during the day between my breaks. My concern is that doing this will cause some sort of issue later. What say you experts here? Any helpful suggestions or just wait it out? Thanks in advance!
Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters My kiddies only bonded with her during the summer...we got her in March. ??? My 7 year old was a bit sooner because he was old enough to tell her off and train her with us. Now they are all inseparable.
Re: 10 week puppy and my 4 daughters I am sure it wont be a major problem, come a few months down the line. The biting usually gets less once the big teeth come in, and after a few months it all but stops. I know it seems horrible now, but I promise you, keep on with the telling him no, removing him from the girls if he nips them, reducing the opportunities for biting and nipping, and in a few months it'll all seem like a bad dream and the girls will adore him. And welcome to the forum!
