Re: 11 yr old lab Hi Randy, Welcome to the forum. It is not uncommon for a whelping bitch to have several puppies, and for labour to stop for two or three hours, then recommence with some more puppies being produced. However, gaps of sixteen hours would not be normal. If your bitch is contented and relaxed it is possible that she has no more puppies on board. If she is restless or straining, she needs urgent veterinary attention. That means right now. Sometimes the bitch's uterus fails to contract effectively and labour may come to a halt, even though there are still puppies inside her. I do need to add that in the UK at least, seven years is considered the maximum age at which a bitch would be bred. For this reason, I do not have, and you are unlikely to find anyone that has, experience of whelping a bitch of this age. Because of her age and the possibility that there are still puppies inside her, I would strongly recommend that you get her to a vet for a thorough check up as soon as possible. I hope she is ok Pippa
Re: 11 yr old lab Thank you for your reply. It's been 6 yrs from the last litter. I thought nature took care of this. I guess this is an unexpected gift from the DOG GODS.
Re: 11 yr old lab Hi Randy, bitches can remain fertile into old age. How is your girl and her puppy today? Pippa
Re: 11 yr old lab Three still born and 1 is a beautiful gift. She will be fixed tomarrow. Thanks. Randy Bell AKA: Rufes Colomus
Re: 11 yr old lab So glad she is ok and the puppy too. Does she really need to be fixed right now? Seems a lot of stress after this unexpected pregnancy and birth at her advanced age... Might be better to wait until after the pup is weaned? Not an expert here, just thinking out loud...
Re: 11 yr old lab It's sunday in Enterprise, AL. I'll be talking to the vet in the am. If he dose'nt say "shoot her" I won't shoot him. Other than that, I'll go by whatever he say's.
