We have a 13 year old yellow lab named Ellie. She’s about 52 pounds and just had her rabies vac in October. She’s having issues keeping her food down. I have making her food for all her life with brown rice, carrots, green beans, chicken breasts, cream of chicken soup and two eggs. I boil it up and divide it into 16 Oz servings. She’s been the best dog I’ve ever had. Within the last year she’s started vomiting her food up occasionally and I would put it down to maybe eating something outside that’s upset her tummy. Within the last week, it’s been pretty consistent. It starts with her body spasming and then Vomiting her entire meal. Sometimes that’s it but also it’s been more of this mucusy thick fluid. She’s also within the last year stopped drinking water. I just add more water to her food to compensate. She eats three times a day.
Recently we thought it was something that was upsetting her tummy like maybe the carrots or the cream of chicken soup. We started her on an oatmeal and plain Greek yogurt diet. That helped with the vomiting but she’s starving. We are now adding some protein as shredded up turkey. She liked that. the vomiting has gotten better but she still has this occasional spasming and the want to vomit usually when she lays on her right side.

We know it’s about the end of her life and want to make her as comfortable as we can. She doesn’t seem to be in pain either than not being too happy about vomiting. She doesn’t sleep that much so consequently, neither do we. She is mostly deaf and has cataracts so her vision isn’t the best. We live in a condo complex with 7 stairs that she does a pretty good job with. Poop and potty are good, she still likes to eat and take walks. She’s a happy dog still. Additionally she has a few fatty tumors here and there throughout her body but other than one on her neck, and one in her hind leg joint, they don’t seem to bother her. At least the vets aren’t too concerned about them.

She’s been to vets pretty regularly but with the pandemic, it hasn’t been easy to get her to the vet. As I said, we took her to the vet for her rabies vac and mentioned the issues, he said she seemed good but no blood work since she was ok mostly in October.

What could be the problem with her?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum :)

It's so tough to watch our dogs getting old. I'm afraid I don't have any relevant experience to share, but I hope you find a way to make her comfortable.

    Best wishes, Sarah

I'd try adding ranitidine to coat her stomach, it may help with the vomiting. Also, if she is taking any medication for arthritis, these can lead to GI issues.
