i have a 16 month old lab who is a great boy lovely gentle nature still loves to play and I have just got an 11 week old pup, it a bit hectic to say the least, they are getting alone well playing but I feel the older one is too heavy boisterous for the pup and may hurt in play, is it just a case of supervision and intervention, I never had two dogs, any tips, help would be great thanks
No, you can't leave them to it or the pup can easily get injured. I know of several pups ending up with broken legs after being left to play roughly with a much bigger and heavier dog. You need to supervise closely, separate using stair-gates and restrain at times using a leash or house line.
ok thank you I will do that I just seemed to be separating them all the time an wondering if I was suppose to someone said the older will let the little one know to back off so leave them to it.. but its best to safe than sorry..
Hi @jacquelina I take it that you're socialising the 11 week old puppy with other puppies of a similar size in a well-organised puppy class. Playing with your other dog is not a substitute for such socialisation.
Hi @jacquelina Just put him in an open carry bag and you can take him out now to visit the world. In doing so, he is not on the ground. But he gets the opportunity to socialise. Don't wait for all the vaccinations. The socialisation window will close soon.
I took Meg out and about all over from 8 weeks on advice from my vet. She did loads of car journeys and I carried her to school gates, friends houses, train station etc....all around. She loved it
Please don't keep your puppy home until vaccinations are finished, you really need to be taking them out on a daily basis from 8 weeks onwards - in a shoulder bag if necessary.... See: http://www.drjensdogblog.com/socializing-your-puppy-why-later-is-too-late/
