Oscar is a male now 16 months old, un-neutered and doing well. We want to get another dog...the chance has come up for us to get a black lab and 5 months old.. What's your experience of two male dogs of these ages ?? Or would you advise a female instead..??
Re: 2nd Lab??? I couldn't comment on the suitability of the ages but unless you really have a hankering for a girl I'd stick to the same sex and get another boy. Good luck
Re: 2nd Lab??? I suppose you could introduce them and see how they get on. I guess it depends on their characters and history as much as being 2 boys. I don't have any personal experience, good luck!
Re: 2nd Lab??? Gypsy arrived at 10 weeks old when Tatze was 15 months - it was hard work, but great fun! The problem in the early days was over-playing. So I made sure they each had their space to go to (or be sent to!) I taught them the word 'enough' very early on

Will you still get to see gypsy when she goes?
Re: 2nd Lab??? If you've got an intact male I would get another boy. It will save you the stress of managing an in season girl with an intact boy and avoid the risk of unplanned puppies. If you're confident to take that on great but it'sa headache I'd avoid
Re: 2nd Lab??? What about if you have an intact boy around and get a female puppy but get her spayed when she's old enough.

[/quote] So the question is how old is old enough? Timing for neutering girls is quite a hot topic! My personal opinion is that I would wait for physical maturity before neutering any dog but this does increase some risks while decreasing others. If you wait for physical maturity you're likely to have to deal with at least one season so you'd need to be prepared for that.

You've done so well with her, I hope you get to hear how she's doing.
Re: 2nd Lab??? Well we got 9 week old Archie two days ago and he's settling in really well.. He's jumped in the fish pond (superman style), dug up have the flowers in the garden (and brought them indoors). Oscar (15 months) was a bit put put for the first 24 hours and was a bit sullen, but tonight they're getting on great jumping on each other, sock tugging and generally creating mayhem!! Happy days !!
