Well I bit off more than I can chew with our walk yesterday. : Took Benson for a good walk at Oldbury Court, he loves it there! Was unusually busy, so when we could to our favourite swimming area I decided to take a detour, I was feeling brave so thought I would tackle a steep, rustic path which leads straight up. I had not really put much thought into the fact that 1. I had no idea where the path (of sorts) led, 2. It had been raining and was wet , therefore slippery 3. Due to my accident (broke my legs last year...)and subsequent poor co-ordination I can go up...but don't have the balance/strength to go down steep areas particularly well. So I start to climb up, Benson happily trots on ahead, then the inevitable happens I get halfway up, then slip...give out a yelp of pain as my leg bent a bit too far, Benson races back to me, tail wagging..well that was one less thing to worry about..but I was stuck! No one around, after all who else would be stupid enough to climb a steep stony path after rain?? I glanced at his lead, thinking well I better keep him close, don't really want him running off in the woods right now. So I put his lead on, and he pulls...looks at me then really PULLS.... Did he know I was stuck?? I don't know, but he pulled me up. I kept him on his lead and he took it really slow but pulled me up the rest of the way, more like a hand up really but enough tension and speed just to give me a bit of confidence in getting up the rest of the way. Felt a bit emotional afterwards, because I really don't know what I would have done without him, as silly me had also left my mobile at home! Next time I try a stunt like that I will bring my husband along..
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. What a great story. I wouldn't be surprised if Benson did it deliberately. Some Labs seem to sense when there is something wrong and react instinctively. I hope that he got a big fuss and reward for rescuing you!
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. I guess he has as a small puppy been used to me in a wheelchair and plaster casts. I was at puppy classes with him on crutches...(I know rather a daft time to get a puppy ;D) I think he is sensitive to how I move, interestingly although a boisterous, large dog he is quite gentle and never barges into me. I do get quite nervous when other big dogs are racing around, as to be knocked over could be quite a problem.
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. I think he realised that you needed help as he kept a firm tension, not too much and not too little. I used to train my GSPs to pull me up the steepest parts of the Malvern Hills and would say "mush, mush" and they would then pull ;D
Re: 4 Paw Drive..
"mush, mush" and they would then pull ;D
There is a "hill of death" on one of my walks - I'll have to teach "mush mush"! ;D
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. Oh Kate- I am so glad you are ok! What a good boy Benson brought a lump to my throat reading this.....
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. Oh Benson, what a clever lad you are. You labs are so so intelligent. You deserve a huge gold star and an extra special treat. There's that word trust again.
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. I think he knew and was helping you in the way he knew how to such a clever boy How you feeling today Kate? Hope you aren't too sore? X
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. Amazing boy Benson looking after your mum . I hope you are OK Kate and not in too much pain xx
Re: 4 Paw Drive.. Oh Kate,be careful! What a lovely, story though,as usual a bit weepy reading something like this ..... I often wonder if something happened to me far out in the desert how we would get back.....one of my friends said ' couldn't you send Dexter home to get help like Lassie?' Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ,I nearly did myself an injury just laughing at the thought ;D He would think ,'Great, she's down and defenseless ,let's get me nose in the treat bag!' ;D
