Hi everyone, Tora is now 6 months and like most of you puppy owners still working on recall. She is very social with people and dogs or I would say "too much" social. Simply, when she see other dog or person she have to go there, "say hello" and eventually after 10-15 sec she come back to me. But as we all know meetings others like this is not something we prefer. Now, I am not sure how to behave in such situation, what to do when she run somewhere but come back to me on my recall (eventually) ? Btw, when she start to run, there is nothing what could stop her from doing that. Thanks!
Hi there, recall is always a little more challenging with dogs that are very friendly. Recall where there are no distractions is a simple skill, but recall where there are distractions such as other dogs, is more advanced and it's best to think of this as a completely separate skill. You need to teach your puppy to recall away from other dogs in situations where you are able to control what happens next. You can either do this in a class situation, or with the help of a friend who has a well behaved dog, or with the help of a professional dog trainer (who will use their own dogs as a distraction). In the meantime, when you are out and about with your dog you need to have some great rewards ready for when she returns to you. You could also have her wear a harness and long line so that you can pick up the trailing end when you see other dogs approaching. There's is some more information in these articles: Teach Your Puppy To Come How To Keep Your Dog Close On Walks How To Get A Really Reliable Recall I hope you find them helpful
Thnx Pippa, you are right, in the situation without distraction she is the best dog in the world but.... I am already working with long leash, other trained dog as distraction etc I just was not sure how to behave when she come back from runaway
If you're using the long line, she should not be able to get away? As soon as she ignores the recall, you grab that line and prevent her from accessing the other dog or person. It will also help to be sure you are using INCREDIBLY TASTY treats - like sardines, black pudding, mackerel, paté, tuna etc etc. You can use a plastic toddler spoon to give her some when she gets to you. Labs can be very 'into' people, but luckily they are also very 'into' good food - which usually trumps even people - so take advantage of that!
The black pudding made me chuckle I tried this, but by the time we had nearly finished with training I’d eaten it all not Bruce.
