Hello, my 8 month lab who previously wasn't remotely distracted by runners/cyclists etc. is now chasing after every one that runs past. I have tried Pippa's recall training approach, (whistle) and all other types of treats. In the end the only thing that seems to stop him in his tracks is the word ball and waving one. So now I have another issue that he is obsessed with the ball. Given all the other posts on chasing runners etc. on this and it seems that there isn't any real definite solution - do you think it is okay to just let him love a ball (even though I have been told by trainers that you should not allow a dog to get obsessed with ball throwing). I really do not want to put him on lead for the next 5 years! Thanks for any advice.
Some breeds of dog are not food driven and they have to use other means like toys/balls to treat. I can’t see any problem with it if it works. Presumably you will then carry on with your walk and can put the ball away until the next time. You may need to go back to using a training line for a while for safety reasons. It will be interesting to see what any trainers think.
thank you! I spoke also to the Doggy Day care staff and they said that I know my dog better than others (except maybe them ha ha!) and that if that works, go with it! I have also followed your idea and once the walk is over the ball goes away (i.e. it doesn't come out in the house or garden) thank you again.
