Hi I have a 9week old black lab pup who is constantly crying for periods throughout the night, I have tried leaving him though the crying gets louder, I have tried saying No and putting him back to bed, during the day his crying is less if I come upstairs, if anyone has any ideas please let me know Thanks
It will stop Some pups cry much more than others, and some soon learn to cry for attention. This article will help you a lot. Once you have decided what to do be VERY consistent http://www.thelabradorsite.com/how-to-cope-with-a-crying-labrador-puppy/
Hi and welcome to the forum. When my girl arrived at nine weeks I slept in the spare room with her for a couple of nights, mainly because my husband works 12 hour days and needs his sleep. She settled really well and I have never had any night time crying. I know some people don't like doing that and it's fine but for me it worked. She now sleeps in the kitchen at night Your little pup is probably feeling sad and missing his mum and litter mates. Make sure his bed is nice and cozy if possible some nice big soft toys or a cuddle pal. http://www.petstages.com/product-details/puppy-cuddle-pal I wondered is he is in a crate. I found crating Mabel invaluable it has given her a lovely safe den. It's never used as a bad place but a really happy one. I know it's really hard but don't return to you pup until there is a break in crying. At some point he will have to stop for breath then go to him. I wouldn't say no as it has absolutely no meaning to your puppy at all. You must be feeling so tired try to remain positive and up beat it really helps. I wondered if you had any sort of routines puppies are such creatures of habit. I suggest you play gently with him before bedtime maybe a little training. Nothing too much as you don't want to over excite your pup. When you mention his crying is less during the day if you go upstairs does this mean that you leave him on his own for periods of time. At this age I wouldn't leave a puppy on their own for very long. I didn't leave my girl alone during the day for longer than 20-30 minutes during the first couple of weeks. Others on the forum will be able to advise you better than myself on the length of time a puppy can be left. Hope this helps.
It's a big change for your pup. Try not to say no. That's a bit like telling him off for being sad. I know it's very tiring. Reading the article should help. My first night with my pup I tried to sleep on the floor with her!!!! It was unsuccessful and just put us back a night so poor Chepi went cold turkey the second night and cried most of the night. However, on the third night she only cried for 10 minutes. Just make sure you do a late toilet (I did about midnight). And get up early as you don't want accidents (I started with about 5.15). Puppies cannot hold their wee etc. Chepi is crated for bed and is still happy to go there to sleep at 16 months. Best of luck!
You said his crying is less during the day if you go upstairs - how long is he in the crate for during the day? I would recommend putting his crate in a busy area for the times he needs to be in it during the day, he must be feeling lonely shut away from everyone, and that's why he is crying less when you go up to him. But, to be honest, I wouldn't expect him to be spending much time crated during the day at nine weeks of age.
Jane Martin it's amazing what we do for our Labrador puppies. Sometimes I have to smile at myself at the things I do, thinking I'm the only one and then I read the forum and I'm not alone. I love hearing other people's little anecdotes it's so interesting.
Juno came home to us at 10.5 weeks. The intention was that she would be crated in the kitchen at night. The first night she gave 3 cries as soon as we turned off the light. Have to admit the light went straight back on and she was taken upstairs to the bedroom where she settled in her crate. She whimpered for a few minutes when the light was turned off but quickly settled after I spoke quietly to her for a few minutes and she could smell my hand through the crate. All was quiet until I got her up for a wee and popped her straight back in her crate where she settled with no problems. Juno spent around 12 nights in the bedroom before being moved down to the kitchen where she has slept ever since
Harley cried in the crate almost every night. After several weeks she ended upstairs with us as she developed a respiratory problem (she was on her own bed on the floor). During the day she was fine going in the crate! As soon as she came up to our room she slept 12pm-8am straight through. Last night she took herself upstairs to our bed at 10am and slept until 9.45am today . She is now 2 years old.
