Riley's been a bit lethargic over the last couple of days and isn't fussed about food either. He's never enjoyed the warm weather so I did think it was just him getting used to the warmer days. He'll eat if I pop a bit of something yummy in and he springs up if there's a chance of a game, walk or treats. I also wondered if the clicker training with all the treats was impacting his appetite. He's never really guzzled his food down. Does this sound normal-ish or should I pop him to the vet for a quick check up?
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? As the owner of one who will scoff anything and everything no matter what the weather is like , its hard to advise Barbara, but if Riley seems ok in himself , I wouldnt worry too much . Millie has refused her breakfast the past two days and been picky over her tea, so maybe yes, its just the weather right now
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? My Labrador is first in the Q for "eat for England" competition, no matter what, so have no experience to offer. Riley doesn't scoff food, he drinks neatly, he doesn't lick ears and faces - I'd say you've just got a rare labrador there!
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? I've put a little mashed up sardine in with his breakfast and whoosh it was gone....I think he may be holding out for the good stuff with all this clicker training :
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? Drift has been the same, looks at his food as if to say "do I really have to eat that" and his food is Natures Menu which is raw meats and vegs etc in a frozen block. I phoned the company to see if they had changed the recipe but they hadn't. Drift has been a bit off colour re food, but is quite bright otherwise, so maybe it is the weather. Incidentally I do defrost the food I also put a wee bit of something on the top just to give him a change of flavour.
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? Thanks all, will just keep an eye on him for now
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? I will heroically take your heat and relieve the sufferings of your poor dogs....cold, wind and rain for us this week...
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? Sounds good that he wanted the mushed up sardine. It's so hard to tell when they're really poorly isn't it? Molly's had so many short episodes of sickness over the last couple of months - and some very expensive vet's visits. On Sunday she was a bit sick again, didn't eat all day & only had one walk, but was drinking. By Monday morning she was right as rain, so glad I didn't panic! I guess it depends what Riley is usually like - I'd say if he's drinking then give it a day or so to see how he looks then. Hope he soon perks up.
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? Hope Riley is back to his normal self soon, Barbara.
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? We've done some very short training sessions in the shade of the apple trees this afternoon and he seems up for them. He's dozing the rest of the time but as soon as I move he's alert, I had to close the windows as he was barking at the workmen over the road : Hopefully it's just the warm weather making him dozy
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? I know how he feels.. I have to work this evening, wish I could doze in the garden at home instead!
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? My two don't seem to be affected by the heat either appetite or energy but that's not really a surprise. :. The other dogs in the family are though. They go off food and can't be bothered to do much except lie in the shade. Have you tried doing some training in an evening, if you have chance, when it's a bit cooler ?
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? Hope he gets back to being himself soon
Re: A bit lethargic and not terribly hungry.....too hot? or something else? Poor chap. Lilly has been a bit off colour too, though nothing wrong with her appetite. We were putting it down to some change of dynamics in the house, though she has also been sneezing a little. I guess our furry friends can be pretty sensitive, not just to the weather.
