Hi all, I just need to vent a little. My guy is 7 months old and recently started hiking his leg and marking!! He does it when he is bored or worked up. I chalked it up at my friends house to him being overly excited but tonight he did it in my house! He was such an easy guy to potty train that this feels like karma. I really want to wait to neuter him but if we can't get the marking under control I may need to do it earlier. He is also humping other dogs any chance he gets! Ugh!!! Thanks for listening!
Neurtering him won't stop him marking. Or humping. He is just a teenage boy being a teenager. Just train him as if you are potty training again and distract him when he's humping I had to teach my boy when it was ok to mark and when not. He's fine now and gets it. hes 3 now but I'm still careful when he's excited uncertain or in a new place.
Neutering certainly stopped my male dogs marking! However, I think I know what you mean @SwampDonkey, teach the dog not to stop and pee at every opportunity at available posts, lampposts! I taught mine not to do this, but only when I gave him permission to do so. Of course, once off lead, he could pee wherever he wanted
I have no experience with males but I know one of the members here says that you have to toilet training boys twice. Once as little pups and again when they start lifting their leg. Good luck!
Stanleys recently been neutered and he still marks like nobody's business. He even marked a crisp packet on his walk the other day. I just leave him to it - if he wants to spend his walk bimbling around, peeing on things then he can. A game of tuggy or throwing a ball sometimes distracts him and we do some training but he just likes to have a sniff and pee. It's his walk after all Humping does seem to have improved. BUT I think that was before he was neutered. He got snacked at a few times before I could get to him and I think he's learnt it's not polite and seems to have stopped now.
Coco (neutered) was very late to lift his leg. He now marks on walks but never in the house, and not in the garden either. Treat it as a backward step in house training.
I've never had problems in my house, but twice my unneutered boy has marked plant pots on the floor in other people's houses. We don't have any plants on the floor, and I think they must have smelt like soil so he thought it was ok. Now, I keep an eye on him and distract him if he starts sniffing plants!
Thanks everyone! I just couldn't believe it when he marked inside my house! He barely even sniffed before he hiked his leg up and marked! At the park he was attacked by a this one female dog for trying to hump a few weeks ago but so I thought he had learned his lesson but I was looking at a small cut on her paw and next thing I knew my guy started licking her vaguna then mounted her. Luckily this time I had her head because she doesn't back down when she pins another dog. She is also spayed
