Sorry, I am just being indulgent here For those who may read this and don't know , Millie is our rescue terrier type , age unknown as she is a former stray but somewhere around 8-10 ish , we had her last summer as a pal for Lab boy Sam who is now three ( and a half, very important that half ) In the short time we have had Millie , she has had a bit of a bumpy ride , phantom pregnancies , then her spay , but worst of all the emergency eye surgery , a cornea transplant in late August to save her eye, sight is compromised in the eye but the eye is healed nicely . Despite all of this , she is a dear little sausage, she adores Sam and it seems to be mutual . The one area that has needed lots of work has been socialisation , she had none at all, in fact very little training all round . She had a habit of running to other dogs , mostly in friendly fashion but very occasionally, her body language was iffy , this was a worrying habit and crucial that I got it sorted out before she met her match . I noticed that she adored retrieving , so she soon became hooked on tennis balls , I decided to use this addiction as a tool and it worked like a dream . The moment she set off to run , I recalled her and showed her the ball, magic This worked well for months until eventually , just for me to call her and tap my pocket was enough to have her legging it to my side , she would completely ignore other dogs around if I had the ball with me, even if she didn't have it , she realised that she had to work to have her reward . This afternoon on our wet woodland walk , we met a lovely lady with one Irish Water Spaniel , one black Lab and two Gordon Setters , I was so preoccupied with admiring her dogs that I didn't think about Miss Millie until I realised that the whole gang were meeting and greeting beautifully , all wagging tails, even my terrorist ;D . There followed a lovely walk with Sam and Millie, bumbling along with their new friends and never once did Millie look uncomfortable and never once did she look at me for her ball , just trotted along in happy mode with her new big pals . This has filled me with joy , to see her not fearful of other dogs but enjoying their company, looking so little amongst five bigger dogs but having a lovely time
