We've had our Labrador Retriever for about 2 weeks now. He is a 7 month old male. I registered with this website just the other day and am still searching forums for answers. Here are a couple things we are dealing with - if folks recall related threads that they thought were helpful I would be very appreciative if you could highlight. Thank you in advance!

    1) Stopping and refusing to move on a leash. Blackjack will stop, usually distracted by a sound or smell, sometimes a simple "its OK" will get him moving again but other times there's little to motivate him to start walking again--even kibble doesn't work. I read one person in this forum say their Lab when he does this seems to be "taking it all in..." - that's also been my experience. Usually I just wait him out or wait until he gets distracted then he will start moving again. I've had to pick him up though and move him if he was sitting in the road.

    2) Crate training is in progress. We have tried to make it a happy place for him and on several occasions he has voluntarily walked in and napped. other times, however, when we have to crate him during the day he seems stressed a bit--specially if we had to run errands out of the house.

    3) We've had many good news stories too, however. His temperament is fantastic and he settles down very well. He calmly sits and waits for dinner-eating only when given the proper command; same for putting on his collar and going outside.

I have a professional trainer coming this Friday to work with us on these issues. So I am happy to share whatever I learn.

Do you know much about his background? Has he been walked previously? Why was he being rehomed?
