Somethings when i take oscar on his walk he will act very normal sniffing about enjoy his walk wuite the thing, then all of a sudden he will just sit down and refuse to walk, it comes out of no where and i'm pretty sure its not becuase he is tired as we have not been out that long. So then i have to get him to walk by encouraging him with treats (not good i know but we would be up there all day) as a firm command telling him to come does nothing. So he starts walking and then he's jumping up, once hes been given the treat and biting wanting to play i think. But i find it very bizarre the way his mood changes so quickly is this a lab thing? Any ideas to why he doesn't want ot walk?
Re: acting strange on walk Perhaps he thinks that by sitting he has taught you to give him treats then play with him?
Re: acting strange on walk perhaps but i only give him a treat as a last resort- plus he never expects to get food on a walk. I have nno idea what it could be. Thanks anyway.
Re: acting strange on walk Hi Lauren! ;D I've been meaning to reply to this for a few days now. I'm by no means an experienced dog owner. Dexter (7 months) is our first dog and this is a wholeeeee new learning curve ha ha. Whether this helps or not, or I've not understood properly, I remember watching Puppy SOS programme on the TV. The family who were on the show at the time, they had a small dog who refused to walk when on her lead and I remember the trainer/behaviourist said to the family, don't stop when he stops and look back at her. Keep on walking. Surely enugh, after a few days (maybe weeks) the dog was walking without stopping. Maybe this may walk?
Re: acting strange on walk Hi there, Any help is appreciated oscar is our first lab and my goodness hes so much hard work we previously had a white german shepherd and she was quite badly behaved but oscar makes her look like an angel. Thats great i will definetely give that a try; the only thing is he's seven months just like Dexter and he's very strong and stubborn. It just results in me pulling him and his harness is coming over his head haha. On the other hand i have just purchased pippa matinson's book and i think thats going to help with all of the issues we ahve wiht oscar. thank you for your help

Julie and charlie can back me on this as charlie hates wearing a harness. With a flat collar fitted correctly there is no risk of the dog backing out of it, with most harness dog can escape from them, even ones that say escape proof, our dog has proved that they are not escape proof.

So its very difficult to find something that he won't get out of as it appears hes abit of an escape artist ;D. I think its just acase of persisting with walking despite oscar wanting to sit down.
You can get clips that a dog can not bite and unclip, ones as this http://www.ruffwear.co.uk/dog-gear/leashes/knot-a-leash-redesigned it has a lockable carabiner that you have to screw on and off she osca can not undo it
Re: acting strange on walk
thank you, so much this is exactly what we are looking for
No problem, that's what being on study leave involves, lots of internet searching ;D

Re: acting strange on walk
Julie and charlie can back me on this as charlie hates wearing a harness.
This is true - Charlie hates his harness. He would also lag behind, and stop walking. Harnesses, haltis, and all sorts of different devices do this to some (but not all) dogs. They look truly miserable in them.
Re: acting strange on walk Hi Julie, Oscar isn't too bad in his harness any other time for behaves on his walk and he's so much better on his walk in the harness than he was with his lead and collar. Maybe it just depends on the dog.

Maybe it just depends on the dog.
Of course it depends on the dog - some dogs are fine with a harness. If your dog isn't walking forward on a walk, and there is no medical problem, what do you think the reason is? Refusing to walk forwards is often because the dog is unhappy for some reason. What else might be causing this?
Re: acting strange on walk I use a harness for Harley. She doesn't like putting it on (I will admit to bribing her with treats :0) but once it is on, she walks so much better with it and will happily run around off lead with it on. I use the harness due to my spinal problems - she is easier fir me to control with a harness than a collar and lead but saying that, her heel walking is improving daily and recently I will only get a few pulls on the way to the park and none on the way home As you say, dogs are all different and respond better with different things
Re: acting strange on walk Hi Julie, it's hard to same it could be that he thinks we are headong home and doesn't want his walk to end or that becuase its just before lunch that he wants his lunch :. It's hard to say as he only does it know and again, thinks its becoming apparent oscar is a special case haha ;D. Hi Naya, Oscar doesn't really mind the harness or his lead he's more interested in going on the walk ;D, it's whens he's in the vets or t puppy classes he used to bite the lead and so how unclip it :, as for the pulling i can't really feel a difference i know a lot of people feel a difference with the harness less pulling but i dont feel it makes a difference, as i feel he is still pulling (i will say this he is quite strong). Thanks again julie and naya, we will get there eventually
Re: acting strange on walk Have you tried clicker training, I used it on our last pup and it worked a treat (excuse the pun). She walks beautifully to heel on and off the lead. Here is the link, http://www.thelabradorsite.com/clicker-training-heel/
