Just been hearing about someone's dog who's been rushed to the vet with an adder bite. Hopefully they got him there in time.

Please take care on your walks everyone :)

Yes, my friends' young Clumber spaniel. :( :( It happened this morning. An adder bite is seriously nasty. I have had three dogs bitten in the past. If you suspect an adder bite even though you haven't actually seen the snake then that is a medical emergency and the dog needs to get to a vet asap!

One of my terriers suffered an Adder strike in France , we got her to the Vet quickly for anti venom, she did survive but was terribly poorly for a while . The strike was on her neck , it swelled up like a bag of water and turned black, given her size she was a very lucky little dog .
Hope your friends dog will be aright Heidrun :(

My GSP was bitten by an adder, anti-venom is not usually available and steroids do the trick. Mine was quite poorly but at least she didn't lose masses of skin as a Golden Retriever I knew did.

Unfortunately the incidents of dogs being bitten by adders here on Exmoor is quite significant. There was an article about it in the local newspaper only last week. The vets around here all have anti venom in stock but will only give it if the swelling is difficult to control.

This might be a silly question but maybe others might be wondering as well. How do you know if it's an adder bite or a wasp sting for example ? Are there any specific symptoms or signs that the yelp was caused by an adder and not an insect ? :-\

The Clumber boy is home now and resting, he's got a big lump apparently but hopefully he's going to be ok. Everything crossed here!
