Hi, just wanting to see if anyone has any advise as my partner and I have just adopted two dogs, one if pure breed black lab (Birthday) the other is a cross with a kelpie (Daisy). Birthday seems to be pretty much settled already, a vert laid back lab. Daisy however is a little anxious, I had them both in the lounge last night and when my partner came home and we wanted to take them for a walk Daisy wouldn't move from where she was and would growl as soon as we walked into the room. Eventually my partner took Birthday for a walk and I stayed with Daisy, I eventually coaxed her out of the room and she has been fine since but just wondering if there is anything we can do to make her feel at ease? On a different note Daisy also has a large ish sore next to her nipple which she keeps licking so is making red, she lets me touch it with no problems so not sure if it is hurting her.I didn't want to take her to the vet yet as she is just getting to know us and don't want to make her anymore anxious. What could it be and is there anything I can do for her?
Re: Adopted labs Hello and welcome from me and mine Well done on adopting two dogs, what a brave move Rescued dogs can take a while to settle into a new environment , some settle immediately as mine did, but others need some space in order to adapt, seems like you have one of each category I would say just leave Daisy be , dont try to rush her , allow her the space and time to trust , to accept all of you and her new home and try to be as relaxed and acting normally around her as possible . Did you adopt them as a pair or seperately ? Re the sore , I wouldnt like to guess , if she will allow you to , bathe it in warm salt water, keep an eye on it and pop her to the Vet if it doesnt improve at all . Good luck to you , keep calm
Re: Adopted labs Hi there, Sorry I don't have any experience with rescues either, just wanted to welcome you to the forum. Hopefully you will find some helpful resources and advice Jac and Lilly (3&1/2 year old black labby girl)
Re: Adopted labs Welcome, and Kate's advice sounds good. Hope your two new doggie friends settle in soon - but just give them a bit of time to get to know and trust you.
Re: Adopted labs Hi there, and welcome to the forum. You have taken on quite a challenge there! But good for you for giving these dogs another chance. What information did the rescue centre give you about Daisy, and her interactions with people and other dogs? Did they know about the sore? It may just be where she has been lying on a hard and dirty surface, but probably best to get it looked at by the vet If she is too scared to go out at the moment, your vet may be able to make a home call. Good luck with your new dogs, they will need lots of love and patience but will reward you in kind once they have settled in.
Re: Adopted labs Thank you all so much for the welcomes and advise Daisy seems much better today and we've gone on some lovely walks already. I'm looking forward to getting to know the dogs and giving them a loving home. I look forward to further discussion on here very soon. Thanks again.
