Bailey now 1 is an absolute joy, calm(in the house) socialised , crated (all due to religiously logging in and getting excellent advice when puppy here)
Not always 100 percent b4 you think I'm a gloating witch! Lead walking/heel not super for example!
We would like to try camping, at dog friendly obviously site
    Do we take the crate?
Or let him sleep in front porch of tent not in crate?
Will it mean no crating on return? One night only!
    All advice welcome as always

You gloat away; it's nice to have things we're proud of and this is a great place to share them!

I'd do what you're most comfortable with. For one night, I'd probably have the dogs in the bedroom section of the tent with me, and expect to get no sleep - I don't sleep well in a tent anyway, so at least they'd be company for me when I'm awake at silly o'clock. At least there's no bed for them to steal ;)

If you just put him in the porch, make sure it's completely safe and he can't crawl out under the flaps. Also, he may be more likely to bark at people going by if he's not in with you.

The main thing for camping with a dog is to ensure that they don't overheat. In the summer, it can get super hot in a tent, even early in the morning, so if there's room, it may be worth putting in a fan to keep Bailey cool overnight.

I don't think you can expect one night to mean he's decrated at home - I assume there are a lot more opportunities for mischief and destruction in your home than there are in the front of a tent!

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

We took Lola camping when she was around 13 weeks and we're going again this weekend. We decided to take her crate because she was so little, toilet training wasn't rock solid and we didn't want her chewing everything, but we're hoping when she's older she'll be fine on a bed in the living area of the tent. As Fiona said, you'd have to make sure the porch was completely secure, and dogs can be quite good at nudging zips up/down to open them. I think you just have to weigh up your options really :)
Another thing to consider is that most campsite require you to have dogs on leads at all times. For this, we use a harness (so she's not pulling round her neck), a locked out flexi lead and a metal screw stake, which is fairly cheap and really useful!
Hope you and Bailey both have a great time :)
