Hi I'm looking for some reassurance. We have 2 beautiful labs Alfie and Toby who are aged 7 and brothers. I'd never owned a dog before but my husband did so hence why we have them. To say I love them is an understatement. Anyhow Toby our black lab had a lump removed roughly 4-5 years ago. All came back clear so no worries. Now though he has had numerous weeing problems. Every 6-8 weeks he struggles to wee and stands with his leg up for so long trying to wee he gets tired and just stands on all 4's weeing. You can see it's just drip, drip, drip.

This last for 4-5 days and then he's OK but this is about the 8th time and today for the 1st time he weed on the carpet. He's booked in at the vets tomorrow but could this be more serious that just an infection?

Hi Sirbob, I really can't help as my 10 month old pup is my first ever dog. Just wanted to say hi and welcome and please let us know how you get on at the vets tomorrow. I hope Toby is ok and it's nothing too serious

He could have bladder stones or crystals which block the urethra. These can be sorted usually. Or an enlarged prostate.

If he was a human bloke I would be going for a prostate problem (no idea if it is common in dogs) but I imagine you would want to rule out a urine infection first.
You might want to take a pee sample along to the vets, pre-empt a request
    Good luck
    And welcome to the forum!

    Hi

Thanks for your help. Toby was at the vets yesterday and the vet thinks he may have stones. He gave him a shot of antibiotics and he going back in about 10 minutes for X-rays.

We've had to starve him since last night so our other lab Alfie is waiting for him to go so he can be fed. So let's hope all goes well for him this morning.

    Many thanks.

As soon as Toby left I fed Alfie - his food still remains untouched and he can't settle.

Well I've rang the vets for an update. We can pick Toby us at 4.10 today but the vet wants to talk to us about his x-rays. I feel sick.

Please try not to worry. I know it's not an x-ray but meg has had 2 ultrasounds done in the last year, one for her heart and one on her bladder and kidneys and each time when the vet rang she said she wanted to discuss them with me. Like you I felt sick, but when I saw vet she explained they couldn't find anything. (eventually meg diagnosed with cushings disease) I think it's standard practice. If it is stones, then he will be able to be teated. I know they give us humans medication to break them down but I don't know if its available for pets. Good luck and please let us know how you and he gets on.

I can understand how you feel, but if it is bladder stones, the vet can operate to remove them and if crystals in the urethra there is an op for that. I have seen it done dozens of times and all the ones I saw were successful.

Thank you everyone for your advice and reassurances.

We picked Toby up and the vets showed us his bladder and there was nothing nasty to show. She says if it's stones he's passed them but they took a urine sample which they've sent off.

However upon x-raying his stomach they discovered 2 perfectly round objects - golf balls. So he's booked in on Tuesday to have them removed.

Toby is the worlds best golf ball locator. He finds them buried deep in the dark. Since his hobby began we have almost 200 golf balls in the shed. Let's hope I can sell them to pay for his treatment and maybe have some money leftover for a muzzle.

The thing is the vet says their is no way to tell how long they have been in his stomach. He's 7 1/2 so its anybodies guess.

Im so glad its nothing nasty though. I never thought I could love a pet so much. They are both just part of our everyday lives and everything we plan involves them. My husband preferred having 2 boy dogs as we have 3 daughters and he was truing to balance things out but they cause as much worry as the kids do.
