I don't know if its because I am older or just that I have my rose tinted glasses on but agggh I had forgotten how super patient you need to be training loose lead walking. Meg (8m) is awesome pup but crikey today she really upped her game. Umm I think I need to chill and remember she will get there in the end but boy today seemed like she never would. Patience, patience patience. Just a little moan as she brilliant generally for her age and its not her fault, its my responsibility to teach her. Right off to run round a field off lead to recharge (both of us) :)

We're now at 7.5 months and Maisie has been a star at loose lead walking and I was feeling quite smug ::)..........UNTIL this week! Nightmare pulling and barking at everyone! Where has my well behaved pup gone? It must be their age (I hope!). We've been back to basics over the last two days, lots of stopping and turning around much to her annoyance! I think it's starting to make a difference.

Murphy is 1 year and I`m only just getting a proper loose lead ??? Now all I need is to bring him back level with my knee ::) I agree it takes ages and shed loads of patience, I feel I know every bump in the pavement in each direction for approx 100 yards from my house.

I can totally empathise with your feelings. Molly is a year old and quite frankly I'm fed up to the back teeth with the loose lead training. I thought I would have cracked it by now.

But, and it is a very big 'but', we have large dogs, we haveto teach them to walk nicely. If you look around there are an awful lot of smaller dogs that are pulling, lunging and milling about, but it is tolerated because of their small size.

I do sometimes feel dejected about how long it is taking to train Molly, but I've had 2 nice comments this week. One man who has known Molly since she was a 12 week old ball of energy who calls her "Mad Molly" ( he's not being nasty)!said to me this week "she's doing well, and so are you." Another bloke I met in the lane with his lurcher said, as she nearly held her sit as they walked past, "she's getting better". I said "really", "yes" was the reply. "A few weeks ago and she would have been all over the place". And you know what, he is right. Being at it day on day we don't see the improvements.

Please don't think I'm blowing my own horn, there is still plenty to do. Just letting you know that there's a few more out here

Harley is 14 months old and can be a night, are going anywhere new. Walking around our local area she is brilliant. After being off lead for an hour, she will then walk nicely on lead! It is frustrating, but it know one day I will get there. Patience is needed, and lots of it ::)

Hi, thanks for all your kind words and empathy. I do agree with Molly that sometimes we miss little improvements as we are so stuck in the overall outcome. I know it will get better and we will get there eventually. I managed it with my other dogs and my Malamute trots so nicely next to me (whilst sniggering at Meg !) Practice, practice practice (and a large glass of wine tonight) will get us there. David here is a recent pic with her Mum and Brother. Meg has the collar on :)

i can get milly to walk well using a headcollar and gravy bones my friend watched her walk right round the local field and said how good she was but if i put the lead on her collar she is like a large horse pulling me and lunging jumping she really hates it and i have had no great improvement in the 10 months i have had her

I've had a terrible time with Molly for the last few days, pulling, lunging the whole bit.

Then it struck me, I was walking her in the dark. Never occurred to me it would make a difference.

Today I walked her in the daylight and she was as good as gold.

I guess it's all down to "proofing"

The two biggest things that helped with Charlie's loose lead - in addition to "never give up" - were a) structured training sessions in a field where all I did was get him to walk properly (with "set up" distractions) and b) training, really training and proofing, a decent off lead heel.

He can still be dreadful in a new, really exciting place though....but recently, even in new places, I have found myself thinking "oh, he's being very good".

It does work if you stick at it!
