Digby has had 4 "eye infections" since I got him and I took him back to the vets again this week with another. Saw a new vet in the practice who I haven't seen before. She gave him a thorough examination including green dye in his eyes which made him sneeze green for a while much to my 3 year olds amusement. Anyway, she said she thought it was an irritation and not an infection and asked if I used chemically scented airfresheners e.g. scented candles. I love scented candles and always have them on - more so in my kitchen since Digby arrived as I thougt it would help with the generally doggy aroma. Turns out they are very likely the culprit for irritating Digby's eyes - I had no idea. So, no more scented candles, just the heady scent of labrador from now on. Lets hope she's right and it is something so straight forward and easy to remedy.
Re: air fresheners and the like I can well believe this , I read recently about dogs having skin irritations after owners had used deoderising sprays on carpets and even on dogs bedding . Its best not to use anything scented in areas where they are , I wash Sams bedding quite often as he loves to get filthy but dont use fabric conditioner or even bio soap powder, but then I`m daft like that Hoping Digbys eyes are better soon
Re: air fresheners and the like What about a candle warmer? That way none of the wax goes in the air when it burns.
Re: air fresheners and the like Have a read of this link.... http://www.silentmenace.com/-Air_Fresheners_.html The easiest way to keep your house smelling fresh is to wash the dog's bedding weekly and fling open the doors and windows as often as you can .
Re: air fresheners and the like never heard of a candle warmer. I do really love candles though, and lamps and lanterns and lighting in general, will choose what I use much more carefully though. have never liked those spray air fresheners - my mum used to use loads of stuff like that - all the rage back in the 70's - horrible aerosol sprays, that shake and vac stuff (where we all had to put up with her doing the dance and song that went with it - EVERY time!!).
Re: air fresheners and the like Juno had really sensitive skin, on one occasion we had all the carpers in the house professionally cleaned, her feet came up like balloons and her eyes closed up like she'd done ten rounds with Mike Tyson! So yes, I can well believe the candles are the culprit - they make me sneeze too. To help clean the air I use dishes of white vinegar or of bicarbonate with a load of lemon juice. The lemon juice one is less pungent but both work well. If you want to keep with your candles have a look for organic, herb infused beeswax ones, generally they don't cause reactions, I get mine from the local craft fairs so I can't give you a supplier I'm afraid but the all knowing google will be bound to point you in the right direction. Re: air fresheners and the like will look out for those Kerryn, we have a really good health foody / organic shop in town so will ask them. would be good if I didn't have to give up on the candles - although I assume non scented would be fine.
Re: air fresheners and the like I am going to look for the soda and lemon juice NOW! Knew she would smell but not used to it yet....guess it will get worse when she rolling in that fix poo!!!!
Re: air fresheners and the like I love the idea of your organic candles kerryn Not sure I am into natural cleaners though. I like my fragrances too. Thought I would chip in though, that just about every household substance is floating in the air, and if you can smell it, its because its molecules are floating up your nose (and into your eyes, down your throat etc) A lot of allergies in people these days are down to environmental pollutants and household fragrances. Plug ins are the worst but even fragranced toilet cleaners are culpable. Jac
Re: air fresheners and the like That's really interesting - Poppy gets eye infections quite a lot too - and I love candles too (though not scented ones). I always put the eye infections down to her love of water - ponds, puddles, lakes, ditches - but I'll take a break from the candles (nearly spring anyway ) and see if it has an effect.
Re: air fresheners and the like I know what you mean Jade - Digby is my first dog and he smells pretty strong (to my yet unaccustomed nose) - a friend has a lurcher and also know a weimeraner but neither particularly smell to me. Labrador seems to be something else!! I did read this many times before I decided a lab was for us so was expecting it....just haven't quite got used to it yet. All this wet dog weather probably doesn't help. As for fox poo.....its in a league of its own.
Re: air fresheners and the like I keep expecting to find a pile of mess, but no its just her smell! He he.
Re: air fresheners and the like Labs seem to stink, but I think you get used to it after a bit. It must hit visitors when they come in though! ;D
Re: air fresheners and the like Two people today have commented on her lovely puppy smell.....i am now prepared for it to get alot worse!!
