    Hi everyone!

So it's been pretty difficult to update everyone as I've been pretty busy lately but now I have a moment to update everyone on Lucius allergies.

So the scratching did get better with diet change but then he suddenly started up again after a month or so on the new diet. It's been hard trying to work out what's affecting him as his allergy test only came back with food allergies which we aren't feeding him as hes on a diet of raw duck at the moment and nothing else except salmon treats which are 100% salmon and since he's not allergic to salmon or duck or venison that's all he's had for the past few months.

So, back onto steroids and antibiotics he goes to stop the skin infection. Bear in mind he's on apoquel this whole time to stop the itching which hasn't worked. So he's been put on prednisolone and taken off the apoquel as those two meds don't mix well but he had to be on a low dose of the prednisolone as it reacts with his inflacam which he takes for his hip dysplasia. He was also put on clavaseptin too at this time .

Two days after he goes on his meds and we noticed his breathing was very erratic and almost like he couldn't catch his breath. So back to the vet he goes. Blood tests showed nothing except elivated liver levels which is to be expected with all the meds he's on. The vet wasn't happy with his breathing so put him on vitofyllin which opens his airways. After a day on this he's much better .

The reason for his breathing issues was down to him having an allergic reaction to the spores that were in the air at that time. He described it as having an asthma attack and we are now treating him as if he has asthma to prevent any further attacks. No sprays or areosols or strong perfumes. He's being kept on the vitofyllin but he mentioned the possibility of an inhaler if he got any worse .

    Hi there,

Thanks for finding the time to share an update with us - it must be tough juggling so many vet visits and new treatment regimes on top of an already busy life.

Good luck with the latest set of meds, Lucius is lucky to have you fighting his corner!

Just to put another idea in here - After 6 months and seeing no less than 5 different vets we found that our dog's serious skin problems and massive hair loss were not "allergies" needing months of very expensive treatment but were in fact Mange - needing one tablet. Shocking - I would not have believed it. So I would really advise that before you start on immunotherapy you get double checked by a vet who has not got a vested interest in "allergies". and btw a biopsy is not a good way to look for a needle in a haystack. Happily for us Dog is now on the mend and the "allergies" are gone!

Hi, sorry to hear about poor Lucius's problems...I sincerely hope he gets better. I just posted a question about Colostrum for dogs (Bovine colostrum powder). Many people swear by it and says that it provides the immunity to fight off allergies and inflammation. I am thinking of trying it.
