Monty loves a rawhide and it really does a wonderful job of calming him down and keeping him focussed instead of chewing our arms! I've read a bit about them and I'm not hugely keen on him having it, so was looking at alternatives. He already has a Nylabone (is that the right name?) that he likes, it the rawhide always takes preference. I read on here somewhere where someone recommended SafeBone which looks like rawhide but is made from natural ingredients. We picked some up the other day and he really does like them. However, they do not last as long, he ate about half of it in a short chewing-session, and it left a load of messy debris. The biggest downer however was the most disgusting, yellow runny poo that followed (he has a raw diet so his poos are normally nice and firm and non-smelly). Are there any other alternatives? Something to keep him occupied while we are just sitting and chilling. He likes a Kong for a bit, the Nylabone for a bit, but gets really into the rawhide. Thanks James
Re: Alternative to rawhide? We use these in medium, they last for ages, and Benson loves to play with them first before settling down for a chew. Both dogs love them and they last for ages. The also sell tripe sticks, which compared to others I have bought seem to last quite a bit longer https://www.millieswolfheart.co.uk/Millies-Fishy-Chew-Sticks
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Urgh, good lord, they look RANK!! Therefore MUST be tasty! Thanks, I'll give them a go!

However, you failed to mention one thing.... My kitchen now smells like a combination of a fishing port and a mortuary!! They STINK!!!
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Rice bones are great for small pups, but hopeless for older ones as they don't last 2 minutes once the big teeth start coming in! Hedgehogs are great for little pupsters too - made of sweet potato, I think. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edible-Hedgehog-Chews-Medium-Size/dp/B00CJV86CM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1428521418&sr=8-2&keywords=hedgehog+dog+chew This is Gypsy with her hedgehog at 12 weeks old - I could give it to her for quite a few days (until Tatze nicked it and chomped it down in 30 seconds flat!)
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Oh my! How gorgeous is Gypsy!?!? 8) Bonnie likes those little hedgehogs and the rice bones as well. Even so, at 26 weeks, they don't last her that long. I was also wondering about alternatives that would last a bit longer (and wouldn't stink!!!) ... I was also wondering what people thought of those dental sticks that you see everywhere...?
Re: Alternative to rawhide? I use smart bones for Harley and she has the odd rice bone, veg chew (like the hedgehog) and a very occasional dental stick. Mainly, I use kongs as they seem to keep her occupied plus I know what's in them is healthy

Re: Alternative to rawhide? I gave Riley a hedgehog, it lasted 2 seconds and gave him a runny bum I give dried tripe(outside!) and the occasional rawhide but I'd like an alternative too. I'm still waiting to find the magic thing that is good for their teeth, healthy and safe.......

But Guide Dogs don't allow them due to the possibility of chipped teeth.

It's an absolute minefield !!
Re: Alternative to rawhide? At the moment, the Millie Wolfheart fish chews are proving to be very yummy. They do stink however. But our poos are still solid

Re: Alternative to rawhide? Bully sticks are our chew of choice here - they last a while (longer than 5 seconds), are low fat and safe for teeth. They are kind of fibrous so need a good chew (have a cleaning effect). But they are not cheap. And they smell horrible! For the uninitiated, bully sticks are dried bull penises... Only a dog would relish such a thing!
Re: Alternative to rawhide? When I got them I had to keep them in the "Wendy shed" to avoid the smell.....
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Well, we've recently had a problem with rawhide. Charlie loves it, I mean really loves it - he parades his small cigar of rawhide round the house for 20 minutes showing everyone that he is clever enough to have a stick of rawhide before settling down to enjoy it with huge relish. I used to buy these small cigars branded "good boy" and recently ordered a pack of 100. They came and looked different. The colour and texture was different, and the label was different. They gave him terrible runny poo. It took us a few days to work out what was causing it (he had previously been fine with these chews). Since we have tried smartbones etc. and other suppliers of rawhide (expensive and cheap, stuffed with delights such as cow esosophgus and not...) and are now out of options, the rawhide has to go....sadly. Charlie is very upset. Fish skin bones also give him very runny poo. So it's back to pizzles for us now - pack should arrive tomorrow. Stinky city.... ;D ;D ;D
