We don't bathe Aspen often, but we try to brush him when he's shedding a lot. I have noticed that anytime he goes swimming he is very, very itchy for the next couple of days. We only swim in lakes. It hasn't been warm enough for any nasty algae or anything to appear yet. Any tips on how to relieve his post-swimming itchiness?
There can be lots of itchy making things in the water, pollen, warm weather or not. Would you drink that water straight from the lake? There's stuff in it. You could try hosing him off when you get home.
@MF not moldy, but a slight wet dog smell. I assumed all dogs had that. Should he not smell like that? And @Snowshoe you're right! I suppose I do forget to hose him off. I will try that and hopefully it relieves the itching!
Snowie doesn’t normally smell of wet dog even though he swims every day. I do towel dry him after every swim. Sometimes he’s smelly - if he’s grimy or been licking a lot - then I bath him. I also thought all dogs smell and I’ve often been left with a horrible smell on my hand after stroking a dog. But Snowie doesn’t have that smell all the time (he has had it, sometimes worse when his skin is bad), and my understanding is that it is caused from yeast overgrowth on the skin.
