Help!! I am new to all this puppy stuff. He's 7 weeks, how much should I be feeding him? If I go by the side of the bag it says 30g for a whole day, that's not enough at all that's like 2 tablespoons, I've been feeding him 4 table spoons per meal 4 times a day!! Help!! That was recommended by the breeder.

    Hi there

What food are you feeding, exactly?

Your previous posts say you are feeding bakers complete. 30g on Bakers complete puppy food is for an adult weight of 1 - 1.5kg.

If your labrador might weigh, say, 25kg when grown, the range for 6 - 12weeks is 110-430g.

Have you been to your vet yet, for vaccinations etc.?

Does your feeding guide look like this:

If so, at 2 months, for an adult weight of 25kg, the amount is 270g. The volumes usually depend on the expected adult weight, not the weight of the puppy.

It would also be 270g daily, so split that into 3 or 4 meals.

Your vet would also be able to give you a good idea of the amount you should be feeding as how often.

I see! So a lab on average is 25kg adult then? I think I get it now

Well, they vary hugely as adults from about 20kg up to 40kg (more or less would be unusual, but not unheard of). 25kg is about middle of the road. Maybe more if your lab is a heavier type, perhaps from show lines, maybe less if lighter from working lines. If you don't know, 25kg is a safe assumption.

2.7kg at 8 weeks is quite light (but my lab is a heavier type, so maybe that's why I think so - he weighed much more at 8 weeks). I just wondered if you'd popped your pup into the vet for wormers etc. yet? If not, it's best to go before too long anyway.

Having now checked, this article: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/how-much-should-my-labrador-weigh/

Says: As a very rough guide, many Labrador puppies will weigh around a kilo for every week of their lives. So you would expect a ten week puppy to weigh something in the region of ten kilos or around twenty-two pounds.

A twenty percent variation around this would be fairly normal. If your puppy falls outside this variation he may still be perfectly healthy, but if you are inexperienced, a check with the vet is a good way to put your mind at rest.

So if your pup is only 2.7kg at 8 weeks, I would check all is well with a vet.

Our breeder said that a puppy will eat the size of its own head (!) at each meal (assuming two meals a day).
We're using CSJ puppy food and feeding him about 350g per day. He is fourteen weeks. At 10 weeks he weighed 10kg.

Hope that is helpful as a comparison.
