I'm afraid I had to leave a comment to say we have plenty of both here ;)

I have removed the link above as the website concerned contains a number of articles which are re-written versions of original articles written by me. The person in question has not responded to requests to take down the material he has plagiarised, and I shall therefore not be giving him the benefit of traffic from this website.

You weren't to know Roz, so I apologise for having to interfere with your post.

Quite right too! I know how it feels to have others nab your stuff as their own.

In America they refer show dogs as English labs. They refer to American labs as we do working labs.

It's a fair comparison just different terminology lost in translation.

Can I ask?.. I have a friend who has a black lab about 9 months old. To look at her you wouldn't recognise her a full lab. She is so small and has a very pointy face, my friend says she is an American lab. Are there any real differences. I know every lab/retriever has their own look, some big, some small, chunky, thin etc. I looked in my book and American lab means that it was just born there.
    This confuses me?....

It depends who you talk to...

As Tillydyes says an American lab is what we, in the UK, would call a working lab and an English lab is what we would call a show lab. Show and working lines seem to have become increasingly divergent as each area breeds for different purposes. However I believe that in the purest sense a labrador is any dog that your country kennel club will register as a labrador and you see a great range of shapes and sizes within that.

That is not to devalue dogs that are labs without KC papers or indeed any other kind of dog. I'm a dog fan in general and by no means wedded to the idea that breeds, showing and kennel clubs are always the best thing for dogs ;) (but that's a whole other topic!)
